Default Kroot + Krootox = Turret in the trees?

Re-creating this thread I made before the forum revert.

I had the idea of creating a squad of 10 kroot and 3 krootox for 175 points to use their three 48" guns that can threaten medium/light tanks and lower as a tree bound turret. Basic idea was to deny access to my forces by threat of fire while maintaining a 3+ cover save. The kroot can also shoot 24" so in a clustered area, dropping in some trees could really be a threat.

Anyone have any experience using them as such? Or any comments?

Well, isn't the longer distance rule invalid now that you are supposed to use LOS?

You know, I can't find anything about that. I assume it is referring to trying to fight in woods/jungle terrain, but that doesn't really matter so much since the whole idea here is to use three 48" str 7 ap 4 weapons in trees/jungle as a way to control movement.

Yes it works, it is called a Krootbox. The problem is that you have a minimum of 10 Kroot (and often many more) who cannot harm the target you are shooting at.

For the cost of those Krootox, you could grab a few seeker mssiles, or any Missile Pod XV-8 variant. So a better plan would be to take a group of Kroot and an XV-8, kill the transport, then use the kroot on the infantry that pour out.

In 4th ed. The idea was to abuse the LOS rules, and have them 12" in a forest. Which would make them untargetable by non-woodcraft units, unless they got to within 6" (IIRC). Thos LOS rules (can only see into 6" of forest) are gone now, so ignore them.

A krootbox huh? Didn't even know it had a name. This idea was designed for an army with no free slots in HQ or Elite. Though I will have three Xv8's with Missile pods and Burst cannons, they would at least start on the other side of my army and on the side that would be the most obvious for the opponent to come at me from. I already have seekers in my setup, but the overall idea is either to use this krootbox in woods/jungle with a good 40"-48" LOS, or 12"-24" LOS.

Krootox's are quite good. The real problem they have is their high cost and tendency to stop kroot teams from infiltrating. This makes positioning Kroot much harder. Of course, if you are playing with forest terrain in your deployment zone, or you want to setup a screen of firewarriors in front of your kroot, feel free to pillbox them.
