I think it looks cool. Who's to say that while on the way to an outpost to repair a battle damaged hammerhead, the Tau wern't ambushed or something.

I enjoy makin my tau battle damaged. As a matter of fact one of me Shas'las has a slashed up face covered in blood that I really enjoyed makin. It all really adds to my Cadre's fluff as theyre supposed to be on the frontier of Tau space.

I'd say it's good, but needs to be restricted in ways such as the fact that it shouldn't do anything gameplay-wise.
It always look good, but in the end, it'll be too complicated to work out well as a gameplay mechanic. The most that'll work is starting the battle with destroyed weapons, lowered wounds/armour values, or certain restrictions in movement.

It'll cause too many problems to be fair, as, say, you take a damaged crisis suit with one less weapon systems, but for a reduced cost? I think that can be abused, or become overpriced and useless. It's more fluffy than anything, but there's no usefulness without unbalancing the game. An interesting thing for house rules, but nothing else, I'd say -_-.

I was thinking more of minor scratches and bolter blasts than missing apendages

I would say no, unless it is in the fluff. The reason I say this because the Marines are using ancient armor made back in the day. While the Tau are up to date, New Right off the Shelf type of guys. I am currently painting one model with what should look like a new updated Plasma Rifle.

In this case, I guess it's appropriate, depending on the fluff of your army.
I'm thinking on making a crisis someday (if I ever get around to it) with most of the upper front body armour ripped off, exposing the pilot, but have other parts to compensate the reduced armour to kind of "make up" for it fluff-wise.

All my Tau come back with new gear. They have great technology that can repair any battle damage rendered by the last attack.

I chose campaigns because they will be facing an onslaught of battles and can't go back to base for repairs

I only put it on some of my models. My personal Gue'Veas Crisis suit in it's first form didn't have any beceause it was my first crisis, but v2.0 will have some beceause he's a lone wolf type. My Gue'vesa Sting Teams have pretty beat up stuff, but the rest of my Tau are all damage free.

In my opinion, Tau are supposed to have "perfect" wargear and vehicles. After every battle, I can just imagine them making perfect repairs on everything, and then making it look "show room" condition again...Gue'veasa, however, have "hand-me-downs" wargear...so it would be neat to have battle damage on them...
