Default Pathfinders :(

I made the mistake of taking a pathfinder team in a game yesterday, the first one I've lost in a very very long time. For the price of that squad I could have taken 39 more infantry... Do not take pathfinders in games smaller than 1850!

Valmar:

Perhaps you could give us a lot more information regarding this? It certainly cannot be true to all respects that Pathfinders are a bad idea for everyone, in every game, against all opponents in point values of sub 1850 points. Many people have good experiences with them, and many have the bad ones too. However, you could turn this bad experience into a learning experience by telling us about how the game went, what roll they played, what destroyed them, your enemy in general, and perhaps what you could have done instead. After all, not everyone builds a list for their opponent specifically, which means sometimes we have units which don't do super great against our opponents (Pathfinders for example).

Look forward to hearing more about it though

Cheers!

Well I normally don't take pathfinders in armys less than 1500 I had the funniest thing happen to my PF squad. They were stranded in a match against tyranids (the old ones) and I hadn't expeected a squad of hormagaunts moved friken 18 inches (his first six of the game and it had to be for fleet of claw) to get into close combat with them. He preceded to roll a 1 on every to hit roll on the return I rolled straight sixes for both to hit and to wound and he failed every armor save all with the same dice. My pathfinders killed all 32 hormagaunts with only one loss. I quickly ended the match by finishing off the last of his synapse creatures since i didn't want to press my luck.

But the look on his face was priceless. lol

They sat in the back and sniped at marines after they ran when my Ethereal was sniped by some marine psychic powers. They killed 6ish marines because I didn't have any vheicals left after the second turn to launch seekers from. The whole thing was kinda a fluke because we were playing =a 2v3 with 3000 points on each side but they were doing screwy stuff with their force orginization chart.

My pathfinder teams are 246 points. For that I could get 20 kroot+6 hounds, and 12 human auxillaries (err I'd be like 2 points short). I think they're a huge point sink and shouldn't be taken untill you run out of slots for troops and heavies.

i dont think the sniping of the etherial was legal. what power was it? if he's on his own, 3" away from a squad, he can't be targetted. and i think you used them in the wrong role. most see their primary use as seeker missile guides. they're not. they light up very expensive, and dangerous units for your elite squads to annihalate eg termies for an XV8 team, or stormboyz fro 6 stealthsuits.

I would agree with you not to take them in 1500 pointers. i'd only stick them in 2000+ pointers. and you're better off with fire warriors, and kroot, for the points, by a long shot.

Fury of the Ancients hits UNITS that draw under the line, not models. Thus you can't target out models/characters this way.

If an Ethereal is not joined to anohter unit, he can be hit (and likely will be killed) by Fury of the Ancients.

Last night I took a full team of pathfinders in a 1000 pt. game, and not only did they kill 5 Khorne berzerkers with shooting, they also knocked off the last one in combat. ;DHAPPY DANCE ;D. also, the devilfish is actually alot of help in smaller games as it gives at least one squad good mobility. I for one find pathfinders helpful at any points level.
