Default Tau vs. Tyranids- how do i win?

Well the lucky 13 apocalypse campaign started yesterday and I lost my first game (tau Vs. tyranids) horribly. As all of you tau players who have fought tyranids know that the tyranids are way to fast to be gunned down before they reach your line and kill all your helpless fire warriors. this is exactly what happened and my army was slaughtered and the enemy won big time. I really need help because no doubt I'm going to fight tyranids again (there are 5 tyranid players at my local hobby store!) and I'm completely helpless against them! so if any of you guys know any good tactics against tyranids id be very grateful to know about it .

Well, my best answer would be to go mobile tau.

mount all fire warriors in devilfish, keep crisis suits jumping behind cover/terrain in between shots, hammerhead over broadsides, load up on multi-trackers, etc...

if they use the "mass attack" method, it may be real risky due to the range and how close you are, but if you can crisis suit up afew burst cannon/flame thrower combos, you can slaughter squadron after squadron of gaunts. Even with the +save, it makes them armor save of 5. everygun tau have is ap5 anyways, thus... they die. (cept for afew, but most is ap5 or better)

try this. twinlink flamer + burst cannon on crisis suits. (toss in multitracker so u can shoot both) and see how a squad of crisis elites/hq + bodyguard works.

remember to use the markerlights too. strip cover saves, boost balistics. - one thing, if you kill synapse critters, you have a huge advantage too. that 1 squad near your firewarriors rolling bad for instinctive behavior, could save your life.

Go vehicle heavy with loads of Kroot. Take Flechette dischargers on all vehicles that can take them (including any Piranhas). All any Tyranid shooting can do (even a Venom Cannon armed Carnifex) is glance a vehicle. As long as you keep your vehicles away from assault by any monstrous creatures (or assault by models that have rending), your skimmers will be fine for the most part.

In addition, I'd reccommend taking one fully decked out Kroot squad of 20 with a dozen Kroot Hounds, a Shaper and the 6+ save upgrade. They come in handy during Objective orientated missions. Put your objective in a forest guarded by this Kroot Carnivore Squad and it will be very resistant to attack. The 6+ save isn't much, but the points spent for it can be earned back if it saves at least 5 models in the squad during any assault phase. Any Lictors that hits a Kroot squad like this in cover will get owned. Genestealers (with scuttlers and coming in from reserves) will be the biggest menace. Just center any objective on your side of the board and keep it away from the short table edges and you'll be fine.

I don't play "pocalypse" much, but the above advice will help in regular 40K

Stealth Suits are good as well against Bugs.

Honestly, Tyranids are your easiest opponent as their only real competitive build is the nidzilla list. Go minimum devilfish firewarrior squads, max out crisis suits, get at least one railhead, two if you must, and some broadsides. The piranhas are also a must for blocking the assault movement of any token hormagaunt units he might have taken.

I would separate your army into 3 sections.
1) Mobile Troops (Kroot, Devilfish mounted Firewarriors)
2) Mobile Horde Killers (Firestorms, Hammerheads, Gun drone teams, foot slogging fire warriors, Heatwaves, stealth suits, anti-horde equipped commanders)
3) MC killers (Hammerheads, Broadsides, Sniper Drone Teams, Burning Eyes, Helios)

If you can create a balance between these three things, you should do well. Just make sure not to load up on AP3 weaponry, as Nid players will often take an upgrade that makes all their MC's have a 2+ save.

The three must-have units versus Nids are Devilfishes, Hammerheads, and Firestorms. If you max these out and stay out of assault, you should be fine.

Yes, a mechanized army and lots of vehicles with flechette is the way to counter swarming tyranids. The 'nid's biggest weakness is antitank, and other than assaulty carnifexes (which are slow enough you can stay away from them), the only decent anti-tank weapon they have is the zoanthrope / hive tyrant warp blast. It has most of the stats of a railgun but much shorter range. Your railguns, and plasma rifles if necessary, can outrange it. The creatures armed with it usually have 2+/6+ saves and are immune to Instant Death, but zoanthropes (the more common of the two) only have 2 wounds, so a couple of railgun shots will get rid of them before they get too close. Almost everything in the tyranid army can tear up your infantry (and to a lesser extent battlesuits), but if you are behind a wall of skimmers they will have to get through that first. Flechettes will hurt them BADLY if they try to take down vehicles in melee, but only their big beasts can do it any other way. When it comes to dishing it back out, the only thing besides monstrous creatures that will get an armor save from you basic weapons are genestealers with extended carapace. Rapid-firing from behind vehicles and just sheer firepower will wipe out the basic troops fairly quickly. Just watch for cover saves and use markerlights to reduce them if necessary.

If your opponent is going nidzilla (lots of monstrous creatures and not much else) then treat it like a tank-heavy list. Railguns, seeker missiles, ion cannon, and the occasional rail rifle or fusion blaster will make fairly quick work of the monstrous creatures. In a normal game, only 3 of the carnifexes can have 2+ saves, but in Apocalypse you might have a shortage of armor-piercing weaponry for them. Still, the 2+ save, extra wound, extra toughness, regenerating uber-carnifex that takes twice as much firepower to bring down also costs twice as much, so it balances out nicely.

There are some other builds you should be wary of:

For nidzilla lists, there are several variant big monsters to be aware of.

1) The Flyrant is a flying hive tyrant with Toxin Sacs, Enhanced Senses (BS), wings, and dual Twin-linked devourers. For a rather reasonable cost, this gives the Tyranid player a flying monstrosity capable of pumping 12 very deadly shots. It can in a pinch hit your vehicles too but as long as you keep mobile he will have a hard time hitting them...
2) The boomfex is a Carnifex with Barbed Strangler. Sometimes it's twinlinked. Because glancing hits are much weaker in 5th edition, the Venom Cannon is rather useless nowadays...a nidzilla list can have up to 6 of these monstrosities, which are essentially light leman russes.

I take two Carnifex's armed with Venom Canon and Scything Talons. Their job is simple. STUN the Landraider/Hammerhead/Monolith BEFORE it shoots or moves. If these two models can manage that for five turns, I'm very happy. Occasionally, they even destroy something. But their job is to stun.
