Default Commander Farsight?

I am contemplating getting Farsight for my 1000 point Tau army.
What are the pros and cons of doing so?

Also, is there multiple setups for him that I could build, or is it just one thing?

I could get one on Ebay, bidding is at $7 including shipping right now. It has 1 day and 8 hours left, Although it's already painting

As per Codex: Tau Empire, Commander Farsight cannot be used in any army less than 1500 points. He's still a fun model to have if you're looking to expand your army. Frankly I wouldn't use him in anything less than 2000 points. The biggest advantage he has is his bodyguard. If you're not taking his bodyguard of 7 crisis suits then he's not worth taking. The commander alone doesn't make up for the limitation that he puts on your army. If you take commander farsight alone you're limiting yourself to taking 1 hammerhead, 1 stealth team, 1 broadside team, 1 team of pathfinders, no kroot, and all you get in return is 1 power weapon. Completely worthless.

Only take Farsight if your going to sink the points into his bodyguard, personally i think 20 crisis suits charging down the battlefield is AMAZING ;D [although REALLY expensive]
If you don't want to sink all your points into his bodyguard which i am assuming you don't since your building a 1k army i would just use a normal battlesuit commander because you can make him fill what ever role you need and i personally love them ;D

commander kits dont have drones, just special issue bitz, normal crisis has drones, and all routine weapons.

Would it be worth the effort to buy a crisis suit and then the special bitz? Or should I just buy a commander?

Some ppl run Farsight with maximum bodyguard and regular commander with Relay. Idea is that Farsight & his merry bunch are summoned on turn 2, deep strike in middle of the enemy & scorch everyone with TL flamers. Haven't seen it in action, though...

Personally?

I would just get the regular kit, then look on line for the special kitz cyclic ion blaster, and AFP.

Usually works out for the best, since gun drones can be handy.

This may be a stupid question but in the codex it says that Crisis Battlesuits count as 1+ units in the same way as Fire Warriors. Does that mean they count as a Troop Choice? Probably not but was just wondering...

Sadly not. It means that in an army including Farsight you MUST include a minimum of at least one unit of Crisis Suits, hence 1+. These Crisis teams are still Elites slots though.
