Default broadside?

In a three man squad of broadsides ,what the best number of drones to take, so they don't have to take a moral check if one drone dies ?

You should pretty much always take a full compliment of Shield/Gun Drones with Broadsides.

take none. drones are officially pointless now.

taking 6 drones makes the unit count as t3 with a 4+ save. not good. and if you take fewer drones than suits(1 suit = 2 drones) then suits, as majority toughness/ save take all the hits. anyway, its a 285 point unit. way too expensive.

and anyway, you lose out on target locks, the essential support system for broadsides. take 2 target locks. these suits can fire at a different target to the squad leader. 3 rihinos can be made to go poof! give the other a multi tracker.

Sorry to jump in here like this but... You can't attach drones to a unit unless they are wargear. Basically, you purchase a drone controller and drones for each Broadside, in which case you'd have a maximum of 6 drones.

Aside from that, I wouldn't say that drone are completely useless just yet. GW is aware of the glitch created by the 4th ed majority rules. For now, until they publish a Q&A on the drone issue, I'd use the codex drone rules as the proper ones.

Cheers!

Gundrones, parked with your XV88's in a little cover, are cheaper and just as good as Shield Drones - and pack a little firepower should something come close. The whole point of those drones is simply to absorb lascannon/missile launcher hits on the first and 2nd turn basically. If small arms fire is used against them (such as a heavy bolter) then that's different and that's not a big deal either because the drones will go away and then the suits will be resilient to the bolters. However, all you generally need is that first and second turn to make rubble of the big armor that the XV88 is designed to take down in the first place. Drones are not useless on XV88 teams, they're quite useful. Just because the majority save is down doesn't mean anything when it's a lascannon coming at your face. There are ups and downs, as with everything, but in the XV88's case, the gundrones are indeed useful. Remember that you only need just over half your models to be in cover to afford the cover save. So put the XV-88s in cover with a drone or two and then let the others float around, they don't all have to be in cover to get those cover saves; and that will let those predators' lascannons hit you a few times before destroying them in return.

Personally, I'd say to try out 2 XV-88's with 4 gundrones. It's not too expensive, and lasts a good amount of time the first and 2nd turn when parked in cover, and they output just the right amount of damage to scrap armored tanks that you need destroyed. Destroying rhinos is a job for a missile pod, a Railgun should be pointed at something that costs way more than that XV88 did (generally).
