Default Broadside Bodyguards?

I looked around on the site and didn't find anything and i wasn't exactly sure about the rules so i was just wondering are you allowed to take a broadside as a bodyguard for a commander? Or even could you outfit a commander as a broadside?

No and no.

It states "XV8 bodyguards" IIRC in the codex.

And a commander can't take railguns from the armoury.

I'm hoping their will be an XV88 commander option or special character in the next codex.

Hooray for railguns!
I would take one in an instance

I think that a broadside commander would be a little powerful, maybe he'd have to count his railgun as heavy 2 (maybe OTT). All battlesuits should be bought from the elites entry with the ability to take railguns for x points and then become HS choices.

I thought a Shas'o with railguns would dom-show with it's BS of 4 plus targeting array it's almost a guaranteed hit except on a 1 which i think is pretty hot ;D

I wouldn't take broadsides as a command. They'd slow the commander down too much. What I'm hoping that they get rid of in the next rule book is the stupid limitation on "special issue" wargear where it's only one per army. That's so dumb. Just limit it to your shas'vre battle suits. That way you could have an entire command unit of crisis suits with 2+ armor and feel no pain. Give them 2 shield drones and they'd be damn near invincible.

Your CO is an IC thought and can join a broadside unit. This tactic is useful sometimes to protect your broadsides especially if between the two you have some ablative gun and shield drones.

When I first saw this post this is exactly what I was thinking. This could be intresting if it was in 4th edition > (it would grant him a 2+ save since the majority of the squad has a 2+ save. The commander would also grant better Ld for targeting and if you threw in shield drones it could have been a pain in the butt).

But sadily now your commander would get hit before the broadsides. It would be viable if the broadsides had shield drones* and your commander is cheap point wise (like for ninja tau). If you failed the invurnable save the commander would most likely be dead but you don't have to worry about losing all the drones (they're attached to the Broadsides).

*The drones would have to be equal to or less then the # of broadsides, otherwise the broadsides will get hit first and you would lose the drones as well (assuming you're getting hit by las cannons). Also make sure every broadside is equipped differently so that one isn't wiped out due to 5th edition rules.
