Default Question about shield drones

So, it's time for my daily question. After reading the rules I'm not really 100% sure about how shield drones work.

If I understand correctly, If my commander has 2 shield drones, and his squad is attacked, my shield drones take the hit from him with a 4+ save. so they are basically fodder with a 4+ save to more or less allow my commander to take more hits.

Is that how they work?

Essentially yes.

When a squad takes wounds, you can allocate them to the shield drones, who have the commanders save in addition to a 4+ invunerable save, as far as I remember.

So.. they will mostly have a 3+ save.

But please note that the Drones work ecaxtly like every other member of a unit; they don't utilise any special wound allocation rule. In other word, you have to assign every model in a unit a wound before you can add a second wound to a Shield Drone (please re-read the chapter about wound allocation in your Rulebook; it should be quite clear after that).

Cheers,
-Bone

Ok, I re-read it, so essentially 2 drones would offer 2 placed for wounds to go before I would have to allocate one to my commander. Shield drones are useful for that because of the invulnerable save. Technically gun drones could offer a similar function as well, however, they are more prone to death.

Drones do what they're supposed to do- get killed instead of Tau/ save tau lives.

That's a good statement...you get 3 Gun Drones for the price of 2 shield drones and while they have no invul. save and 1 worse armor save, they supply your commander with 1 more wound and 3 more S5 shots that are pinning.

With the obvious exception that a commander, suit, ethereal, or Fire Warrior can only take two drones max.

actually someone had stated that drones sre treated like crisis suits for the sake of wound allocation when in fact that is not the case. Yes the drones are treated as additional squad members however for the sake of wound allocation they form a seperate wound group because they are different models than the crisis suits.

Of course, my bad. ;D But I think my point is still valid when it comes to non Monat units.
