In the codex it states

i'm a litle foggy in this so can someone clarify.

does this mean they have 2 attacks in combat or is it sill only 1 attack?

But that means they could have killed a chaos lord in one of my past games.

On page 42 of the rulebook it clearly says that two normal close combat weapons gain one bonus attack. so it gets 2 attacks.

3 on charge if they didn't fire their guns

I myself hate charging kroot into close combat. IMO they are so much more effective as a pillbox unit hiding in dense foliage (3+ save) and firing away with Bolter-equivalents at half the cost of a Spess Muhreen. Their lack of armor saves and sub par initiative means that against most enemies, they'll FAIL - either by getting rapid-fired to bits on the way to assault them, or once in assault. You'll need Kroot hounds - and lots of them - to tip the combat in your balance. But hounds cost points and cannot shoot; ergo let the Kroot remain behind and be 3+ save, bolter toting points-worthy units who assault only if nearby Firewarriors are in peril.

In one of my very early games (neatr end of 4th Ed), i charged a unit of 12 into a terminator chaos lord and survived 3 turns of combat. had i realised the advantage of the kroot rifle then i probably would have killed him.

Its all in who you are attacking and what the situation is, last game I played with my guard my friends kroot out flanked in to some woods next turn my shooting was unable to drive him out so in his assault phase he destroyed the platoon command squad in the woods in assault leaving him in control of the woods and an objective. IT took 30 rapid firing lasguns to drive them out next turn....

this will come in handy in my next game tomorow.
