Default Locked unit choices?

Hi there.

In the Codex the 'Commander' and 'Fire Warrior' unit there is a '+1' in front of their name. Does that mean you have to take at least one of these units, or does it represent something else?

Exactly. Need to have at least 1 Commander and 1 fire warrior Squad (and in the case of O'shovah 1 Xv-8 elite choice) for your army to be legal. Obviously yuour second troop choice could be either kroot or Fire warrior though.

Whereas 0-1 means only 1 such FOC slot can be taken.

Thanks for the quick reply, though I am a bit disappointed that I can't just choose an Ethereal as my HQ choice, or make an all mech army.

You could in 3rd edition, but no more...besides Ethereal is too risky now, so it's no big lost.

When GW gives our book a redo for 5th edition this 1+ designation will be going away. There are no 1+ designations in any of the 5th edition codeces currently. This just means that we'll probably be getting more troops/hq's and better options as well. I'm looking forward to it.

That's probably because none of the books for 5th had them in the previous versions to start with, with the exception of IG.

But if they include the Master Shaper in the Tau Codex and remove the 1+ Crisis Suit Commander rule, then I can easily see the 1+ FW rule going away.

I could see the Master Shaper carrying the rule with him that makes FW squads no longer 1+, but I can't imagine a Shas'el commanding a force with no Tau in it.

I don't think that we'll be getting a codex for 5th ed. But hey, that's just the pessimist in me speaking.

Hmm... master shaper? I'm guessing he's a shaper with better ld, more attacks, a better save and access to the armoury?

I'm almost 100% sure that the SM's had a 1+ on their Tactical squads, and Orks a 1+ on their normal troop and Boss.

Nope. Space Marines can take an all-bikes force with a bike captain, or an all-scouts force with nothing special at all. And I'm relatively sure that you can run an all-grots force with Orks.
