Default Those pathfinders makes me feel....

I ever thougt pathfinders were useless couse they cost too much for what they do...
Recently i changed my mind about them.... they could be nasty if used the right way..
Could you give me some tips on how to use them properly? How many Rail rifle should i put in?...Should i give the the target lock? some suggestion about deployment?
Thank in advice to all answering.

if you use broadsides... play them sort of like you do them... get them in a position where they can see anyone who will decide to come towards you so you can light them up and destroy them.

I have mixed feelings about these guys!

Sure they are fun to use and all, but it seems like they are a primary target to kill for my friends (Which is fine and all, taking stress off of my XV Suits)

They die too quickly for me, buuuut i do like the idea of targeting enemies too shoot seemer missiles at!

dont move them closer to the enemy. use the free move to get them to a nice spot where they can light up priority targets.

the role of the pathfinder is to markerlight espeically dangerous units for destruction at the hands of a crisis, or stealth team. For the former, 5 terminators, the latter, 15 ork stormboyz are perfect examples.

and thats it!

I know I know.

But it always seems that I put them in a nice spot, I start marking the bad guys, and all fire comes thier way.

If I leave them inside the devilfish, I cant use the markerlights for another turn cuz its heavy, and that means they can be shot at!

Although, I think I may have found a solution:

Find a good spot with your fish.
At the start of the next turn, land the fish so it blocks LOS, and unload the Path Finders!
They cant shoot my PF, but they can shoot the fish. If they destroy it w/ a 6" well, sucks for my PF!
But if they dont target the fish, I move it next turn and mark some units!

Target locks - God no. I cannot see a use for that, unless you're fighting leadership 5 or 6 hordes who can be pinned. You're not going to change the game by aiming three rail rifles at three seperate targets. You don't have the high strength to realistically dent a vehicle, accuracy to land the hits on monsters, numbers to dent weenies...... There is no reason to split fire and lose path finders.

Deployment? Mainly what deadnight said, sideways maybe but try not to move up. You want at least two turns in between their assault units and yours. You have a 36 inch range so you could always just deploy backwards so normal weapons can't touch you, or have to test to hit them. In any event, keep their devil fish ahead of them even if slightly - you never know, they might fail a leadership test and have to target the tank.

Rail rifle numbers? If you're playing one squad of pathfinders, I would say zero. They aren't efficient weapons for the points and the BS skill of our troops. If you're playing two though, I would cheerfully insist you use 3. You can use the first squad without rifles to light up a target, then pop three rail rifles into them with the next squad using the lights to guide. Rail rifles hitting on a 4+ isn't that great, but hitting on a 2+ turns it into a very high quality weapon. So there you have it, maybe 3 dead marines, some lights floating around and now you can guide your heavy weapons into them.

Asides from increasing your accuracy with valuable weapons, markerlights ignore cover saves when guiding a weapon. This is pretty big. A markerlight + Ion Cannon into some marines in a bunker = 3 dead marines. If you think you're light on lights (no pun intended) you could try strapping them to team leaders in fire warrior squads - or taking a target lock for the pathfinder team leader. You get to fire 7 lights in one direction, 1 in another. I've found it to be usefull.

I, personally, dont find them worth their point cost, but, If you do want to use them, I would suggest using as many Rail Rifles as allowed.

They help to keep the enemy from getting close, as well as provide a use for markerlights when all Seekers are used up, and nothing else can be brought to bare.

Not to mention... they look awesome. >

Unfortunately, a pathfinder team can't markerlight for their own rail rifles. Sorry =(

The team shoots simultaneously, and in order for a marker light to work, it needs to have been painted BEFORE the unit using the light fires. It's in the FAQ, on GW Online, I believe.
