Default Vote for Tau Special Characters

I personally I like Aun'shi, he's my main HQ and has done extremely well against a GK squad with just 4 FW bodyguards in CC (mind you the other 8 got shot to pieces)!

Farsight.

How can you beat a guy with a massive sword who counts as a Monstrous Creature plus his armies are so much more entertaining and intruiging, game wise and fluff wise. Then theres the matter that if you speak to any Farsight player he will no doubt have some form of story about how O'Shovah took out some ultra powerful CC creature (you cannot top a Tau model beating some CC nasty), even though it shouldn't happen. Though many would disagree with my opinion but meh I don't have any issues playing him, nor do some of the other Farsight players here...

I say Farsight because the fluff about him is so cool and the model and its special rules really make Farsight interesting.

Favorite Tau Special Character :: Aun’Shi

Special characters are odd in the game of 40k as they are pre-designed and cannot be altered (well, some can a little bit) and that they do not follow that generic feel that the rest of the units do until you spice them up with the flavor of names and historic background for your force. So special characters are kind of a quick way out of that state of genericness where we can instantly have a little story to the force without being too creative (heaven forbid!).

For me, most special characters are usually boring or just not very interesting except in the fluff of 40k as the embodiment of the character in the 40k game leaves most with a sour taste in their mouth. After all, the characters are usually so great that in the game, they should function as super heroes almost, however most do not.

Some characters however, take a great stance in the game of 40k that no others really do, with the fluff and the rules to make it tie together to fit very nicely, balanced and in a manner that is interesting and not just grossly under or over-powered.

Aun’Shi is just that character. Aun’Shi is the type of character who has a nice stat-line to remind us that he is truly great in the heat of battle, but also he has the character that a special character should have and a good individual feel to him. As an Ethereal, he’s already a great addition to the army and he benefits the entire army very well in the only way that a true leader of any army can, making an Ethereal unique amongst a sea of characters that are all the same with different names basically. So having an Ethereal that has a real history to him, and a good one at that, is a great opportunity to explore the Tau’s truly unique Special Character: Aun’Shi.

First of all, let’s take a look at the man himself:

Equipment:
  • He has a Shield Generator, granting our Ethereal an impressive invulnerable save; he has both grenade types and his famous Honor Blade which carries the rending ability when he fights.

His equipment alone is impressive considering what he is in game terms and fluff terms, and with his very nice stat-line he seems almost as if he can actually be an incredible fighter on the battlefield, and indeed, he can. He may not be the best as many people simply compare things to marines all the time (and justly so), but in an overall 40k sense, he is quite impressive with what he actually can do and has for his nice points cost, which isn’t under-priced nor grossly over-priced.

Character:
  • The character of Aun’Shi is a great one in how he functions on the board. He is a leader of course, but he is a leader of the people so to speak. He’s not just an arrogant and pompous side line battle commander who issues orders or boosts moral while taking the high ground for himself. Aun’shi is a leader who joins the ranks of the lower classes, where he feels the best at and is rock solid there as any squad with him are beyond inspired and gain great benefits as a squad, making the squad faster and attack more in combat should they be assaulted. The Tau may not be a combat-artist army, but with high numbers and volume, they can actually do very impressive things, and Aun’shi, making a name for himself battling through the Orks, these bonuses to the squad he joins are actually quite good as they are the perfect stat-increase to fight the basic Orks, with higher initiative and more attacks, with our much better armor save.

The real intrigue for me behind the character is that he is a people’s leader. He’s not just a hardened and well trained battle veteran such as a Shas’El or Shas’O and he doesn’t just send small squads to their death for the Greater Good. Aun’Shi leads his trusting brothers personally in the front lines and inspires all around and especially with him. Aun’shi leads by example and has a very humble and modest air about him as a character as he does not take the spot light of being a one-man army or super force in 40k as many other special characters are. Instead, he’s well balanced out and takes second fiddle to what he’s doing for the army as it’s leader.

Aun’shi takes the wonders of the Ethereal, the uniqueness of a leader that only the Tau have, and adds his own flavor of humbleness, making him one of the greatest leaders out there both rules-wise, idea wise, and fluff wise.

he is a semi official special character that costs 0 points but can only be used in fire warrior themed scenarios. he's a bs4 2wound fire warrior. and he has an assault 2 rail rifle. ;D

i like him for one reason: the tau are a race dedicated to technology, and ranged combat. Kais is the only character from the GW stables who embodies te tau art of war. and he tinkered with his rail rifle, making it assault 2. how cool is that!
