Default Nightvision

I was wondering about wargear and equipment like the black sun filter and its equivalent in other armies. Does it affect rolling for sight when trying to spot Stealth Suits, Grey Knights and whatever other units have a similar ability?

Korik1:

Black sun filters are rather unique, because other armies don't really have something that modifies the roll very drastically. We get extra dice for spotting distance, but only for our single model with the black sun filter. Other armies have "nightvision" such as Chaos, but it doesn't really add anything, but it does allow them to "re-roll" sometimes their spotting distances. And devices such as searchlights don't deliver the same either as they do not change our roll when spot checking, but instead allow others to see the same target that he spots (if he spots it).

Stealth Suits actually can be seen by models with search lights, and because of that, other models will see the stealth suits with rolling spotting distance. However, black sun filters work differently, as they do not benefit other models except themselves. Black Sun Filters effect night fight, so a model that specifically uses night fight rules, it will give a little extra helping hand, meaning it will help to see those stealth suits. The Grey Knights are special, because during normal conditions, the shrouding is it's own effect and is not nightfight rules, so a black sun filter will not help us out. However, once Night Fight rules are in effect, it is indeed helpful to help see the Grey Knights.

Similar abilities that are specific to a model and actually help see in the dark, not just benefit other units, would be something like the Psyocculum for the Witch Hunters, which allows Inquisitors and their retinues (or squads they've joined) to see witches in Night Fight without even testing to see them, for example at least.

So if I fought GKs in a Night Figth scenario then their shrouding would be nullified since I'd have to roll for sight anyways? Or would I have to roll for sight and then for shrouding?

Korik1:

The Shrouding specifically states that nothing that augments sights, like search lights or night vision skills, will work against The Shrouding. However, when Night Fight conditions are in effect, this rule is over-riden while it is Night Fight. In that case, you can use your search lights, night vision skills, black sun filters, etc. That's where the Black Sun Filter will be more useful, though it's pretty rare to see a Night Fight game like that.
