Default Worth taking Disruption Pods AND a Multi-tracker on a Hammerhead?

Do people usually take both of these systems on their hammerheads? I haven't played my Tau in a long time, but now that I'm getting back to them it seems to me I used to just take the MT and move the HH at least 6" to get the "skimmers moving fast" save.

Now, I'm a very casual player, so it's possible that was just a stupid move even back then. What about now, in 5th edition?

... You take both. You do not take one, or the other, or neither. You take both.

Yes, we lost skimmers moving fast. But it compensates a little for something else we lost when GW decided to thoroughly screw us over: Defensive Weapons.

Now, if you want to be able to fire your SMS or bursts after moving (unless you'd rather fire ONE of your two burst cannons instead of the railgun or ion cannon?), you have to have a multitracker on.

for what you pay, just take both.

You may not get first turn, and that cover save is valuable for the half a firewarrior cost.

Multitrackers are mandatory, or should be mandatory on a hammerhead. Whats the point of moving, if you cant shoot? whats the point of the vehicle if it doesnt shoot?

Disruption Pods on (Tau) tanks are pretty much standard in 5th and Multi-Trackers really should be on the Hammerhead. Take both.

Reasons:
- 5 pts to get a save on you tank. Dude that's awesome.

- 10 points and your Railgun of Death gets to move 12" a turn while firing.

- Said combination is diabolical and helps to level the playing field that is quite skewed in other areas.

Always take both the two upgrades that are needed. Also moving makes you harder to kill in close combat with a hammerhead and you can still get shots off if you have a multi tracker without getting automatically hit and then penetrated on a 2+ with a powerfist. Multi tracker makes the skimmer fun to play as well it is no longer a turret but rather a flying gunship of doom that can respond to threats all over the battlefield.

With the ion cannon the multi tracker can also help to get around marines with cover saves if there is intervening cover or even an intervening unit.

Disruption pods are great as well. The cover can protect really well from missile launchers or lascannons. This will help immensely in making sure your hammerhead does not die on the first turn. However the one thing that bypasses disruption pods well is meltaguns. These are so short ranged you get no cover save and they get +1 damage along with 2d6 penetration.

Defensive weapons sort of made me take a break from tau.

Really great feedback, guys! Not just answers, but the reasoning behind them, too, which was incredibly helpful to me. Thanks very much.
