Default Can FW/DF be split up?

I'm very new to WH40k, but I have been lurking for a few weeks(here and at ATT)....used the search function, and didn't find a satisfactory answer, so please help me out.
My Eldar buddy (also very new to WH) says if I deploy my FW's in a DF, they are one unit, and have to stay so during the entire game, staying in unit coherency. I thought the FW's could be dropped off and the DF could be used independently. Who is right? And is there somewhere in the rules I can show him? I can't find it in the tome that is the rule book!
I have read about how the Devilfish is no longer strictly dedicated to its Pathfinders in 5th ed, but does that apply to FW's also, or am I talking apples and oranges?

Devilfish is a transport vehicle and does not need to be in unit coherency. You can use it to transport FW's and then fly it somewhere else and do whatever since it is it's own "unit". Now where this is in the rulebook or codex I'm not sure since I'm at work.

Welcome to the world of 40K.

The rules for this are that once it has deployed it can then leave the unit and ferry other squads even if it is a dedicated transport. It's the same with all transports. ;D

So if you DF deployed the FW it can then go off and use transport another unit aswell.

The only other thing to note is that no other squads other than the one it is linked to can start the game in it.

Rules for embarking/disembarking from transports are on pages 66-67 of the rulebook.

Hope that helps, and good luck starting 40k.

67 has the dedicated transport rule. The coherency part, your eldar friend is speaking out of his flamboyantly colorful craftworld rear.

Page 64 for that, though overall its more reading most of the movement and vehicle sections entirely. Vehicles don't do 'units' or coherency with infantry.

Rplank, your friend may have misread and misinterpreted the rules for vehicle squadrons. These vehicles do have to stay in coherency, though the coherency range is doubled.

Everything else has pretty much been covered by others before me.

Thanks for the responses! I think "Units of vehicles-squadrons" on 64 will satisfy him. It specifically states most vehicles fight as individual units.
I did let him read about his speaking out of his flamboyantly colorful craftworld rear...priceless! ;D

Closest I can think of is Dark Angels Ravenwing, but that's Speeders with Bikes, not Infantry...

Paronas (sorry for the probable spelling error), elder vypers?, sentinel squadrons, and land speeder squadrons to name a few.

Even Ravenwing squads are bought as a single choice, but once you deploy them, they deploy as separate units, same as with the attack bike with the regular bikes.
