Default Is the shield generator worth it in 5th ed

Like the title says now that cover saves are pretty much always there are shields worth taking still.

I do not use the Shield Generator. I prefer Shield Drones.

Pros of Drones: If you fail the Save, you lose a Drone, not the Suit. They cost the same as the Shield Generator and they do not take up a hardpoint.
Cons of Drones: If you get hit 3 times at once with Instant Death weapons, you lose the Suit AND the Drones. If you lose a Drone on an IC, he needs to take a Morale Check.

It really is crazy easy to get cover saves in 5th, so the sheild gen just doesn't seem worth it to me. The sheild drones ability to protect an expensive suit from insta death is priceless though.

Shield generators have one use in my mind:
Protecting important/expensive models who are operating very close to the enemy (12"-18") and are likely to be fired upon with AP1/2/3 weaponry.
Besides that, stick to shield drones.

The main advantage of the generator over the drones is if something comes at you with a powerfist. If the unit takes more than two hits you're going to have to take one of the wounds on the suit, and it will insta-kill him if he doesn't have his own invulnerable save. Admittedly, he might die anyway, but with a shield generator at least he has a chance. I think drones are better, but there are times where it's good to have both.

The same goes for multiple S8 and up weapons. If you have two unsaved wounds, even with 2 shield drones, the commander has to take one. If you have a shield generator, you still have a chance to live.

It's pretty useful but it means you can't fire two weapon systems in a turn (which I find is 10X as useful), so I only give them to about one of my battlesuits(if not none).

Where are you getting that from? Do you mean not having access to a multi-tracker? If so, then you are right. For this reason, it's usually only used on suits with either 1)twin linked weapons or 2) team leader rank or higher, as they can hard wire the multi tracker. Also, some dual weapon suits (soulcleanse for example, fusion cannon + flamer) don't need a multi tracker, as their weapons have highly different targets and as such, can take a shield generator.

BTW, theirs a signature setting on your profile options, no need to paste it into you post :P
