Default XV8 Commander Config

I got my Tau battleforce today, and I've been putting together random troops from it and converting a ton (like my heavy-weapons fire warrior), and I wanted to remake my XV8 commander. My original had a plasma rifle, a fusion blaster, a targetting array, and a hardwired multitracker.

For my new commander, I was thinking plasma rifle, burst cannon, targetting array, and HW multitracker, for more firepower. Now that I think about it, I could also go with a Shas'O, plasma rifle, burst cannon, missile pod, and HW multitracker... I could use some advice. I like the idea of a heavily armed commander, like Or'es'ka from Dawn of War...

You could try a positional relay commander for a ninja army. Failing that I wouldn't make any permanent equipment it really is better to make it where you can switch pieces out unless your making a fixed commander conversion for a story reason.

There are a few problems associated with Burst Cannons on Crisis. First of all, you have plenty of S5 shots elsewhere in the army. On the other hand, Crisis have access to a lot of toys you'll find nowhere else in the Tau army (Plasma Rifles, Missile Pods). If you'll hand one to your Shas'O is up to you, though I'd prefer Plasma/something else.

Another problem are Crisis with three weapons. I fielded one myself once, because I liked the look, but the problem is that you're wasting one weapon - the Multitracker only allows you to shoot TWO weapons.

I guess in the end, it all depends on what you want to do with your Commander. If you want a centerpiece Commander with added flexibility, there's nothing against three weapon systems and a HW MT. If you want a support Commander, the Positional Relay will work fine. If you prefer highly specialised Commanders (PR/FB - Marinehunting), nothing's stopping you, either.

Of course, what you equip your Commander with depends also on the rest of your army - I usually design my Commander last, to fill in any gaps in my force.

Cheers,
-Bone

I will always stick by the Centurion as the ultimate HQ choice ('El with CIB + Plasma + targeting array + HW-Multi tracker = 100 points). However, I have also had success with an 'El with a missile pod, positional relay, and shield generator in low-level ninja Tau lists. If you want a three weapon suit that seems to work pretty well for most people, the missile pod + plasma rifle + fusion cannon is the way to go. Versus vehicles, you use the fusion cannon and missile pod, versus marines, the fusion cannon and plasma rifle.

As CmdrBonefish said, you should try to use your commander to fill in the gaps in your army (I lack TEQ killing power, hence the Centurion). Whatever you feel you need more firepower against, kit your commander to face.
