Default Revenge vs SM drop pod

I just have to share a nice trick I blundered into for getting rid of marines in drop pods. The drop pod game down, and marines disembarked around it as usual, firing rather than moving. I had a crisis shas'vre with twin missile pods and ABFP so I targeted both weapons on the drop pod. For once, the ABFP blast didn't scatter so it hit all the marines. When I resolved the hits on the drop pod it exploded, hitting the marines with another blast! I don't think very many of them died, but it was still nice to see.

I'm not actually sure about the order of things, though. The drop pod dies, of course, but if 2 marines die from the one of the blasts, do you still roll for wounds on the whole squad with the second blast since it all happens simultaneously? Not that it matters a lot with how tough a marine is.

Since all weapons are resolved simultaneously I would assume so and as long the ABFP doesn't scatter it should also hit the surounding SM's. Nice discovery! Now I have a nasty suprise for all those drop poding marines. >

arn't drop pods kinda big for this? I mean, marines come down, they deploy around the footprint of the drop pod.... isn't the drop pod's foot print like 6-7 inches in diameter?

Yes, but you can move the template to afffect several marines (provided that the circle is on the targeted model).

Actually I'm not sure. let's say you start off with the AFP and kill two marines out of 10 and then you roll for your missile pod destroy the drop pod, I would roll for the remaining 8, since the 2 dead are moot and cannot be rekilled.

@knight actual: It's possible it wouldn't have worked so well with a true drop pod. This particular drop pod was actually a plastic cup. Before the doors open, at least, a drop pod is quite a bit less than 6 inches.

@flounderguard: I don't remember how we resolved it, but I still think all hits would be simultaneous. All the damage is coming from one suit, so essentially there would be two blasts hitting all the marines, then you allocate wounds as normal. If it was a squad of 8 then there would be 8 rolls to wound at strength 4 (from the ABFP) and 8 rolls to wound at strength 3 (from the pod explosion).

I like the effect, but doesn't this tactic rely on rolling a double 6 (after hitting) to penerate AP12 and then explode?

Well the suit does still have missile pods, so that could blow up the drop pod the AFP is more just to scatter bomblets about the thing and annoy some marines. then the missiles pop the pod and put some more shrapnel into them. If I've read it right that is, seems like an amusing idea. shame my opponent drop pods dreads...

It's not really a tactic to rely on, but it's a good choice of targets if you happen to have a deathrain shas'vre with ABFP. You could try to target the marines directly, but a hit on the scatter wouldn't get all of them, and 2 more wounds on the marines from the missile pods won't make that much difference.

I think I was actually more excited about the demise of the locator beacon on the drop pod than I was about the one or two extra marines I might have killed. It was early in the game, and there were more deep strikes on the way

Oh, and technically I only needed a 6 then a 5 because drop pods are open-topped. (Aren't they?) I admit it's still a lucky roll.
