Default Pathfinders + rail rifles?

Hey everyone,

With a lot of recent discussion about pathfinders and markerlights, I figured now would be a good time to get some input.

Does anyone use railrifles in their PF teams? I played against a unit of smurfs and would light them with the ML's but it made me wish I had some rail rifles with the squad. I was thinking of running 5 PF's with ML's and 3 with rail rifles. Is this a good or bad idea? Granted if I was illuminating a tank it would be a waste but what about the other times when iluminating softer armour or troops?

Thanks
S.M.

A unit mqay not make use of its own Markerlights. You would have to take Marker Drones to help the Rail Rifles, or use another unit of Pathfinders.

I do not use Rail Rifles. I prefer the volley of Markerlights.

It depends.

If you've already have your Heavy Support filled up, and still want those snipers, then yes, it's worth it. Otherwise, a Sniper Drone Team is generally more cost effective over all.

I understand about not benefiting from the units own ML's. I also understand that a squad can only fire at the same target. So when the PF squad fires the ML equipped pf's would fire at a target and the rail rifle pf's would have to fire at the same target.

My heavy slots are always full. Usually railheads and broadsides. I am also not fond of the sniper team and see them as crippled as many others do also.

My biggest problem with Pathfinder Rail Rifles is the same problem with Pathfinders in general: To be at their most effective, they can't move at all. In an army where CC is a BAD THING, they're stuck in place. Anything stuck in place is almost guaranteed to be assualted, especially for something as nasty as up to 8 Marker Lights can put out. For a firebase, they're fine, but they also have a lot of other juicy targets to assault in a firebase besides Pathfinders.

If you don't mind having a static unit, they'll probably survive a bit longer with those Rail Rifles than with out, but then, that also depends on what you have whittling down those units that are racing to your pathfinders. Also, do you REALLY need 7-10 Marker Lights on a target?

I enjoy a full squad of 8 pathfinders. 6 with Markerlights, 2 with Rail Rifles. One reason, was easy to buy, 2 boxes of 3 pathfinders with ML's, 1 box of 2 rail rifle soldiers, worked great financially. Secondly, I do think that 8 ML can be a bit overkill sometime, at the same time, it can be handy. It all boils down to preference. Rail Rifles kill pretty well, and I want a little killing going on with every squad.

Hey, new here. Now, on with the topic!

I think its really going to depend on points. I've been looking at adding some Pathies to my army, and the rail rifles sound good, but (I'm working without a codex here) isn't the upgrade like the cost of a firewarrior? The expense seems like a determining factor here.

10 points for the addition of a target lock and rail rifle (Meq killer) isn't too bad of a deal. No more than 3 can do so, so that should keep points from skyrocketing.

That's true ;D cool & thanks
Then I'd say yeah go for it, I sure will. Given the armies I play frequently (CSM and 'crons) extra shots are always good, especially if the negate armour.

Worry not my friend! I believe the Rail Rifles for pathfinders are sportin' target locks

The reason people don't like RR in their pathfinder squads (usually) is because it changes the role of what the Pathfinders traditionally do. Which is use markerlights, and act as a support unit. They do this really well, and Tau armies do require them to operate at peak efficiency.

With RR, the squad takes on more of a sniper role, than a spotter role. You're doing more direct killing...it reminds me of a Marine Devestator squad. You've got a multitude of static heavy weaponry in one small squad with a transport.

Most people just prefer to leave it to the battlesuits, though.
