Default landing gear

well i was just going through the codex again and some thing pop into mind.

since the rules doesn't say when we can use our landing gear doesn't that mean that we could FoF first then land during the assault phase?

No. I am fairly sure the codex states that the skimmer may forfeit movement in order to not count as a skimmer. This means it MUST forfeit movement in order to not count as a skimmer.

full rule wording

In any turn that vehicle does not move, it may choose to no longer count as a skimmer until it move again.

I've never seen much use for the landing gear, honestly. In theory, you could do something like make a wall of landed vehicles that block LOS to half the opponents army while you kill the other half, then the skimmers can take to the air and expose those sight-lines suddenly. This might work well for a squad of pathfinders (since they seem to take fire from most of the other side), but I've never seen it tried. It seems like an awful lot of things would have to come together just right for this to work.

It seems to be more of a hold over from 4th where if you moved 12" you crashed, the landing gear prevented that kind of death.

Err, no it didn't. The landing gear didn't prevent the crash, that is. Landing gear meant in 4th what it means in 5th: that the skimmer, if it doesn't move that turn, can choose to land and not count as a skimmer.

I never saw the advantage of loosing the classification of skimmer, except to block LOS. However, I wouldn't really consider it an advantage seeing as how it works both ways. Loosing the skimmer classification when not moving seems kinda redundent to me actually.

A turn means movement, shooting and assault phase together. So in 5th it's useless as you could always model your skimmer so that even while on the flying base you couldn't see underneath it. I've done so for my HH's and help out sometimes. It can keep your close range suits alive longer on a table with little to no terain that blocks LoS.

what i'm geting at is this, since you can land it any time in a turn you could actually fire shots first then land the skimmer during the assault phase, making virtually every tau vehicle a mobile wall like the rhino but gives us a chance to pick out units one by one.

Read the wording again:

Nowhere does it say that you can land at any time in your turn. It say that if it doesn't move it may count as having landed.

Such decision should be taken at the movement turn not after. You declare this at the shooting or assault phase and you will be call a cheater or be dreadsocked.
