Default Tau feet?

I was looking at some Tau models and noticed their feet kind of look like hooves, but I'm skeptical. Does anyone out there know for a fact what the heck is going on with the Tau's feet?

I think they're hooves but most people overlook that fact and just paint them the armor color. It seems like a lot of effort to paint something that might mess up the base and no one sees anyways.

Hooves. I was kinda bugged out when I first started painting them because I had a small paint supply, but it seems not many people bother painting them different from the legs either.

Given that Fire Warriors use full-body carapace, and the fact that no artwork or studio models show them in different colours, it's fair to assume that the under-armour covers the hooves.

According to the dissection report in the "Xenology" book released by Black Library (which I think we can consider canon, yes?), they have three broad "toes" and a small vestigial fourth digit. The report indicates that they likely evolved from "cloven-hoofed ruminants", but they definitely no longer have hooves. Those hoof-like plates on the feet of the miniatures are definitely part of the armor.

Thanks for clearing that one up. I always thought the feet were the ugliest part of the Tau. I mean who wants a cow-army?

No, the Tau do have hooves and common practice is not to cover them.

In Fire Warrior, La'Kais is curious to see what the humans have under their boots, and is shocked to see small unprotected fleshy things and is caught wondering why they'd cover them.

In Xenology, the artist took a bit too much liberty in his portrayal of Tau feet. This isn't all that uncommon actually, the Codices themselves portray Tau with a wide range of different hoof structures. What the text in Xenology actually says is that Tau evolved from artiodactyls (even toed undulates), but doesn't make any specific mention of their modern hoof structure beyond what is shown in the inaccurate illustration.

Oh noes... *goes back to secretly wanting to cut the feet off of fire warriors*
