Default Are Eight-man squads the recommended size now?

In 4th edition, I ran a list with 36 firewarriors. 12 were usually an Etheral's bodyguard for the enhanced BS and the ethereal's morale boosting abilities, twelve were footsloggers, and twelve were in a devlifish. This worked pretty well for me, but now that I've come back to the hobby in 5th edition, I'm getting pounded.

Reviewing the forums, it seems eight-tau la'ruas are now the size of choice. I wasn't able to find a particular topic discussing exactly why that is, but I've probably just missed it. Could some kind soul either confirm or deny the efficacy of these slightly smaller squads in the new rules? Also, are people putting all of them in devilfish, or is it still usefully to have squads entirely on foot?

I started using 3 squads of 8 back in 4th Ed and I have no idea why but they worked well for me. The main reason I went for 8 man teams is I wanted 3 squads but didn't want to splash out on another squad of FW to make it , and I've just kept with it.

I use squads of 6 in a devilfish that actually never get out. I've found that fire warriors aren't very survivable in most cases and are significantly less survivable than some of our elite options. So I take the minimum of fire warriors currently and a maximum of elites with weapons that are taken specifically to take out the opponent I'm facing at the time.

8 is a good number, works better for assault armies but can work for shooting too.

Smaller squads tend to be more mobile while bigger squads can bring more firepower to bear.

I have always preferred a full 12-man squad, though my latest army lists call for a pair of 6-man carbine squads that can run 'n' gun towards objectives. I also tend to take more troops than most people.

To be honest - If I did not have to take Fire Warriors, I wouldent! They at least had a use in 4th Ed, but in 5th Ed they just seem to be lacking in every single way, fragile, expensive, low leadership, etc etc etc, Give me Kroot anyday!

Still as the Codex forces me to take at least one unit of the annoying little scroats I take a Minimum 6 in a Warfish equivalent - normally weighing in at 165 Points. The Warfish is there saving grace really, it gives you a scoring tank that ideally your Fire Warriors never need to get out of! Very very occasionally I will take 2 Units of Fire Warriors - but again this is minimum squad size, 6 in a Warfish - and I will be honest, I am only buying them for the Warfish!

As Jedi says - thats the best use for FW's at the moment, whizz them around in a Tank, and only get out if you are forced too!

Scoring tank? Since when? Dedicated transports don't count as scoring units.

As far as Firewarriors go though I take two full squads right now, both mounted in smart-fish. I just bought a third set of each so I'll be playing those as well. Yes they are fragile...wouldn't call them expensive though...but hey, if you want stronger basic troops than play space marines.

Indeed.

@Gonefishing
My friend you are sadly mistaken. There is no such thing as a scoring tank.

Vehicule can never be scoring, not even a transport attached to a troop unit...the only way to have a scoring tank (and I use the term loosely) is if a transport carrying a scoring unit is within 3" of an objective. But even in this case the Transport is not scoring the troops in it are though.

Jeez guys, don't take things so literally! Obviously Gonefishing means that while the 6 firewarriors are inside the fish, it is a "scoring tank". I've read his posts before and although I don't quite agree with everything, I'm quite certain he has a good grasp of the basic rules!

This topic is the First post of the OP, we don't know how much experience he has with the Tau and with 5th ed in general.

Gonefishing post was a bit fuzzy, and just fuzzy enough to lead a new tau player to make a terrible mistake...thus why we clarify it.

It is always good to write one's post in mind of: How will a new tau player with 0 experience understand this? Is it clear or is it confusing?.
