Default A numbers question - Vespid: Value-sized or Super-sized

Ok the title of this topic is rather vague so here's a little of the flavor as to the purpose: I recently read the Aggro Tau topic and I want to use it as no one in my gaming group does this style. Vespid having a very nice assault weapon and high initiative fit compliment the synergy of the list. On a side, I plan on using a wide set of species, Tau of course, Kroot, Humans & a few made up ones. So this time Vespid fits in the theme and adds a little spice as pretty much the only insect species.

So here's the meat of the question. Does anyone know a good number to run a Vespid unit? I realize its not a popular unit but if it was an easy question I wouldn't be asking. Does anyone find them to be useful as a bite sized bunch or should I go for as close to a full plate as possible?

I tend to field them in units of 8.
The reason being they'll shoot down around 3 meqs a turn, while having a large enough unit left to assault them afterward (puts that high initiative to good use)

They're also a good mop-up unit when you wittle down enemy units.

I imagine they'd be very good with Markerlight support and clever use of cover (their reg save sucks, but they can make good use of their Skilled Flyers special rule by hopping from area terrain to area terrain).

The 8 man squad might be a good move, you're putting down enough firepower to make sure you kill something, and if the MeQ's are down to 3 models or so left in assault you could probably beat them.

I say try it out with some friends, make a few different unit sizes and just playtest them, that really is the best way to find out.

btw what would you be using for models?

value size or super size? How about zero-size! hehe... sorry, I'm just a vespid hater... had to throw some hate their way. I'll let you get back to a constructive discussion. ;D

What about markerlighing something for +1/+2 BS then unload 8 shots hitting on 2's and killing on 3's ?

Yeah, but the odds of your opponent being able to get a 4+ cover save against that shooting are pretty good with a savy opponent. That cover save would then require more marker light hits to get rid of it. Which means you have to dedicate more and more points to a squad of vespid. I'd rather take a squad of fire warriors for less points and then rapid fire them. More shots and the cover save doesn't matter. Which is going to get you just as many dead space marines. Just my opinion ....

You can't take coversaves vs Markerlights, bean. There's no wound being inflicted, so no save can be taken. Same goes for markerlighting a vehicle. No damage, no save.

You're misunderstanding. I'm saying that AP3 shooting will kill marines on 3's but if they're in cover they still get a 4+ save and to get rid of it you'll need more marker lights to get rid of that cover save that they get against the Vespid shooting. I'm just saying that practically against a reasonably skilled opponent it takes too many markerlights to make vespid work. Just my opinion though.

sig worthy imo... lol

If I do ever run vespids i run groups of 9. they need to kill 3 to force a leadership check. otherwise take 6. your points are better spent elsewhere usually though.
