Default Fish of Fury question

Why can't the firewarriors using the fish of fury tactic be assaulted. Is it because whatever unit assaulting them would end its assault phase under the Fish, which isn't allowed? Im just not sure I'm getting this.

They still can be assaulted...it's just harder.

If FoF is well done the enemy must place his unit 1" from the nose of the Devilfish. If he is smart he disembarked the gundrones, keeping them 2" away from the fish, forcing the enemy to be with 1" of the drones at the most.

From there it's really hard to assault the fire warrior in the rear. Usually requires 2 turns.

We can't do a proper FoF now, in 5th, can we? Skimmers now block los / gives cover. This means we cannot position troops behind the fish and still shoot effectively. Is there an alternative way to fury now?

Hm... I think there is, but you need two Devilfish to pull it off.

Place the APCs parallel, deploy the FIrewarriors between them, and the Drones in front ot the Firewarriors.

Shoot.

In the Assault phase, jump with the Drones in front of the Firewarriors (If a JSJ move is still allowed after disembarking from a moving APC, that is...). The enemy has to charge the Drones, and can not reach the Firewarriors.

Cheers,
-Bone

Aha! Yes the drones can indeed jump in the assault phase of the turn they disembarked. So it requires 2 fish fw teams now, eh? I'll have to give this one a try - thanks, CmdrBonesaw!

Well, you'd need two APCs to ensure that they enemy units cannot charge from the side, and that you have enough Drones to properly shield the unit, so, yeah... But be aware of A Template weapons and B units that shoot the Drones down. Just to be on the safe side, try to keep 6" 5" between the Drones and the FWs behind them (Drones have 1" diameter bases, and the enemy needs to keep 1" away from the Drones during movement).

Cheers,
-Bone

Another option is to put your devilfish on a high enough stand that the fire warriors can see under it.

Problem with that is that the unit you're shooting at gets a 4+ cover save. Not problematic when shooting at units with an armor save of 4+ or better; but when it comes to Orks or Guard, this effectively halves your firepower.

Of course, using Markers might be of help, but then again, that's a waste of Markers that could be used to up the BS of the Firewarriors...

Does that mean the online tactica articles are out of date now?

If so that could cause problems for beginner players who read that stuff and try and play that style.

There's not much we can do about that I'm afraid.

The tactics are still there in skeletal form...But the game has changed from what it used to be. Really, I've only seen one new "large" tactic come out of 5th for the Tau. Everything else is tiny things that are closer to salves than the antibiotics needed.
