Default My army list so far

Hi all I'm new to Tau but thought I'd post up my army list for any kind hearted soul to comment on and maybe give me some strategies to try, I have a game against marines but this is an attempt a balanced list to take on all comers.
As I said I'm new to Tau so I don't expect to get it right first time so any pointers will be warmly recieved.
Ok.

2 Shas'els 1 with fusion blaster and plasma rifle, the other has missile pod and plasma rifle both have targeting arrays, multi trackers and 2 gun drones. (117+117)

Shas'vre with missile pod and burst cannon, multitracker and 2 gun drones (90)

2 units of stealth with shas'ui with bonding knife (210)

1 unit 10 fw with shasui, bonding knife and 2 gun drones mounted in devilfish with targeting array and disruption pod (225)

As above but with marker drones (265)

2 units of 12 kroot

pirahna with disruption pod and targeting array (70)

10 gue'vesa with gue'vesa'ui with pulse rifle (73)

2 hammerheads with railguns, SMS, multitracker, target lock, disruption pod and 2 seeker missiles.
(200each)

Total: 1735 (a bit of a funny total but the points limit for the game is 1750pts)

The only limit I can see after reading some of the comments already on the site is a lack of marker lights, but I don't own any pathfinders/tetras/skyrays. :-\
I may of course got it completely wrong and that's why I've asked you good gentlemen, thanks for taking a look.

Welcome to the Greater Good!

I think you'll find most of us here at Tau Online to be easy going and a wealth of info.

It seems you have a good start on a Hybrid Tau list. That being a semi-mobile semi-static army. Your HQ's are set up pretty simply, solid but simple. If you have access to the bits you may want to outfit one of your commanders with a Cyclic Ion Blaster (CIB) along with a Plasma Rifle. With a high BS character and a help from the dice gods you should have no trouble taking down 2-3 marines each turn. When thinking about HQ setups it's helpful to keep in mind what the overall strategy of your army is going to be. Personally I'm a huge fan of a strategy referred to as Ninja Tau. I don't have a link to it's tactica on-hand and it seems our search function is down but I'm sure someone will be so kind as to post the link. Read it, consider it and use it. Generally speaking, the only time you should ever have a Shas'vre in a list is as a bodyguard for an HQ. For all other purposes a Shas'ui Team Leader can give you everything you want for 5 points less. Gue'vesa's were a Chapter Approved stat list a few years back and GW in its infinite wisdom decided they weren't "officially legal" with the advent of 5th Ed. If it's a house rule then fine, but otherwise you'll probably need to ask for permission to use them. Since you're lacking Markerlights, it might be prudent of you to put one in your Gue'vesa squad should you continue to use it. Spending the points on Seeker Missiles with no real way to unleash them just makes for a points sink. I would HIGHLY suggest if you're considering expanding your army to get Kroot hounds. They're abit expensive if you get the actual pewter ones but you could also substitute Chaos Hounds for them at a fraction of the cost. Kroot Hounds will make a huge different for your Kroot and turn them from a speed bump into an Infiltrating/Objective Holding/CC monster unit.

Best of luck to you!

Thanks for that I will have to get myself a cyclic ion blaster and was considering Kroot hounds in the not too distant future, though for this week I've decided to drop the gue'vesa (I was using the rules for auxilaries in IA5) and the piranha in favour of some pathfinders. I bought the sky ray kit as I read it's easy to convert into vertualy any fish. I thought I'd try it out with SMS and 2 seekers? Any thoughts.

SMS and 2 seekers on Hammerheads or on a Skyray? Skyrays can't take Seeker Missiles besides what they already have.

Sorry, I didn't make myself very clear there. I've already opted for SMS and 2 seekers on my hammerheads and was thinking of SMS and 2 seekers on a devilfish for a pathfinders unit.

I would strongly suggest using what is known as a WarFish setup for your Devilfish. Usual setups include SMS, Multitracker, D-Pod and Targeting Array. Also remember that transports are no longer dedicated so you can give them to your firewarriors.

If your looking to pick up hounds for Kroot Hounds, look for a box of Chaos Hounds, then convert them, they are much cheaper.

Other than that, I would say that I would drop the second 'El, and change the Shas'Vre suit to a Shas'Ui. I know you can't take the gundrones, but the drones would probably be better as their own unit, or you could take another suit with the points you save. Also I would say you might want to convert some drones into shield drones. But hey, that is just me, you have a pretty good list there for it only being your second one.

=)
