Default Shadowsun and O'Shovah Deep Striking?

Haven't seen a post for this and the search function doesn't seem to want to work. :-\ Some of you may already know of this other may not, but here i go anyways.

I was bored and skimming through my codex and writing up a list for a game later this week, and i come across the special characters we have. In 4th edition, they weren't exactly that outstanding. O'Shovah was still useful with his 8 man squad and other nifty additions, Shadowsun was pretty much useless all she was good for was sitting back with her drones and be a huge point sink.

But now with the 5th edition Shadowsun can be used as she was originally dreamed, DSing in and killing 2 tanks in one go! O'Shovah can DS with 7 other guys right into your face! That would devastate any unit.

So i'd just like to discuss the possibilities with their new (what should have been standard) DSing ability in 5th of what they could do for a list and if they're both, especially Shadowsun worth taking now.

Both are very nice, but personally I'd go for DSing in farsight and his seven samurai. loaded down as helios with some markerlights on the board..... thats easily 15 VERY dead mariies right there.

Yes that would be very tasty, and you'd have a competent CC unit too. Not even MCs could stand up to that many fusions and plasmas. ;D

Nice ideas there. I really had not thought about this before, and I think that this is doable. There are just a couple of things that need to be thought out.

The biggest problem I see is that such high point units need some way of both pulling their weight, and preserving their value.

On the DSing Farsight, I have no experience, but I know there are several here who have. I shall defer to them.

DSing Shadowsun in and blowing away at 2 tanks sounds good, but when you take a closer look, you will see that she has several shortfalls. First is that she needs to be dropped within 6" of two tanks, preferably in their side or rear facings. The next thing you need to see is that you really cannot be sure she will pop either tank, let alone both. Last problem is that her special command drone is pretty much useless that far into the backfield.

To overcome these problems, you will need to either play her as a sacrificial unit like a DS Helio, drop her in response to some DSing TEQs, or drop her towards the end of the game, when there are other targets for your opponent to decide between.

I think the best way to do so would be to drop her with other anti-tank units. So you need another couple of fusion suits with her to pull it off. This ensures that you will be popping something valuable (TEQ, Land Raiders, whatever), make her more survivable and have distractions so your opponent does not blow her right off the map. Too bad she cannot have a bodyguard.

None of these problems are insurmountable, but making everything fall into place could be difficult.

I'm very wary of deepstriking units as expensive as farsight and 7 friends, they inevitably tend not to turn up until turn 5, by which time they're of little use. (Though this was generally before i started using the PosRelay).

On the other hand last time I tried using farsight and friends, he got SAG'd on turn1, the SAG rolled a double 6 to hit and all 8 models were removed without the ork player even needing to roll to wound :|

Ah, so if you had invulnerable saves you would still be allowed them right?

It depends, without telling you the exact rules, the SAG can vary - it can do anything between catapulting the user across the battlefield, blowing the user up, or blowing the target unit up with no saves of any kind allowed.
