Default Calculating Weapons effectiveness

I have to spend a lot of time away from my models and codex, and i am trying to come up with the best army list possible. one of the worst things to happen to me right now is trying to figure out wat weapon is better than another at killing a certain unit. The only way i have to figure it out is to either guess(which for me is always way off), or spending my valuble time for building army lists and formulating army tactics rolling dice over and over again until i get an answer.

Does anyone have a simple math formula on determining a weapons effectiveness against a certain unit?

Simple? No.

One method is to use the average number of kills per shot, sometimes divided by the point cost - that tells you, given you spend X points, how many dead Y models you'll get in 1 round of shooting. Its flaw is that you don't get 1.11 dead marines when you shoot at them with a unit of 10 FWs outside of RF range - instead, you sometimes get 0 kills, sometimes get 1 kill, sometimes 2, and rarely more than that.

Probability mathhammer is a wonderful tool for that, in that you can determine that, say, A% of the time you get 0 kills, B% of the time you get 1 kill, and C% of the time you get 2+ kills, when firing with 10 fire warriors.

From there, you can determine if 10 FWs are reliable enough to perform when you need them. From the average, especially the point-weighted average, you can find cost effectiveness.

Don't just use a hammer or just use a saw, use every tool available.

No formula but i did calculate weapon effectivness of most of the tau guns at BS 3/4/5 against units with T 3/4/5/6 with saves of 2+/3+/4+/5+/6+/-

You know, as much as I "like" those tables... they're not really useful during a game, unless you carry them around in a print-version (how much of a nerd can anyone be?).

During games, it is always best to just do a quick calculation in your head how much casualties you should inflict on average.

I usually calculate backwards, i.e. I calculate how many shots I need to inflict a single wound.

So, you basically start with 1, and then multiply with the modifiers.

A 2+ roll means: Divide by 5, multiply with 6

A 3+ Roll means: Divide by 2, multiply by 3

4+ means: Multiply by 2

5+ means: Multiply by 3

6+ means: Multiply by 6

So, take a Firewarrior against a Marine:

1 x 3 (for the armour save - you need three wounds to bypass it effectively) x 3/2 (your to-wound roll) x 2 (to hit) = 9. On average, you need 9 shots to kill a single Marine. If you have ten Firewarriors in Rapid Fire Range, you can probably kill 2 MEQs in a single turn of fire. Note that you can easily add in the use of Markerlights by toying around with the last multiplier. That's the reason I favor this version when I deal with my Tau - you can easily add in Markers.

Conversely, you can also start differently.

Let's take 20 Shootas firing at Firewarriors.

You have 40 shots, but only 1/3 is hitting: 40/3 = 13.33. 2/3 are wounding, so: 8.888 wounds. Half of them are saved by the 4+ armor save, which leaves us with 4.444 Firewarriors dead - not bad, huh?

Those calculations are, imo, far superior to make decisions on the battlefield than those statistics people write up...

true, i did those a few years ago and thought they might help when hes making a list, but yeah by the time youve played 40k for several years you usually know what to expect from any unit shooting any other unit.

* oh yeah, there is a few weapons missing but the other thread only shows affectivness against 7 different targets, this on has 30 for each :P *

I wonder why everyone forgets binomial probability? If used for an entire squad, it will tell you the chances of x number of kills exactly, given you have Y men shooting against Z enemies, with P chance of death...

Man it's been yonks since I posted on the Tau Boards...
