Either 3 Railheads or 2 and an Ion. 2 Ion would be cool but you'd need Broadsides to compensate.

If your using 3 HH then your not likely to have many Railguns, but then again, if you only have 2 Railguns your probably going to have at least 2 Twin Linked Missile Pods.

So it depends on your army set up really, if you don't have many Railguns you will have to get some Mp's in, if you take 2 and an Ion, what you choose to shoot with the Ion is important as it's lkike an MP, but do you want to be shooting at transports with it?

I'd say stick with 2 Railguns, an Ion and 3 Twinlinked Missile Pods But you could always go for more or less.

2 Railheads and an Ion work wonders beceause you can tankbust, accuratly ordinance, and SMurfbust in one turn as well as not needing the pricey Broadsides. However, when facing an army with ungodly masses of 3+ infantry and only one or two vehicles, the 2Ion1Rail system takes presidence because you can get in 6 Ion shots and still outdo the little armour they have, as well as subheading such wonders as SM Scouts (4+ Carapace).

Sorry, I'll elaborate...

Basicially when you have an army large enough (1500pts+) a Tau player usually has a good variety of anti-armour weaponry such as Missile Pods, Fusion Blasters, Seeker Missiles and Railguns. By having 3 Railguns it eliminates the possibility of having a wide variety of weaponry, and not to mention (even though it's already been mentioned) 3+ armour is running around everywhere and the Railguns Sub-round is not quite effective enough to take them out time and time again.

By adding the Ion Cannon to the mix, it enables a player to have 2 weapons that are heavy-tank, light-infantry shooting and 1 weapon that is heavy-infantry, light-tank shooting.

The Ion Cannon lets off the pressure of putting out Submunition rounds all the time, and so the Railguns can concentrate on the Heavier tanks/beasties, while the Ion cannon can concentrate on the Lighter tanks and Heavier Infantry.

There...lol...how's that? ^-^

It depends. If i run a lot of plasma/pod/missile crisis suits, I'll take 3 rails. If its just my shas'el, I'll take 2 rails and an ion.

Aunat, I'd love to say the above is a load of bull, but I'd be censored. lets just say, I disagree, strongly. ;D ;D
3 rails can be a good investment. Face an ork horde, a third submunition will do wonders. And anyway, if you have a lot of missile pod crisis suits, the need for str7 gun tankbusting ionhead is drastically reduced.

And submunitions are wonderful against SMs, and you kill about the same number with either ion or sub rounds. Me versus iron hands, every time i submunitioned a squad, i got them to run.

Well then horray for lucky you! Anyways, I can't really disagree that submunitions work well against 3+, but when one has 3 Hammerheads, 3 Railguns does not add alot of variety, for your only concentrating on big tanks/beasties and the rest of the time "light" infantry...when you have 2 Railguns and 1 Ion Cannon you are able to become more versitile: the Ion will be able to tackle anything with armour 10-11 and alot heavier infantry and be able to do damage on big "beasties" like wraithlords and Hive Tyrants with more effecency than an Railgun ever will! ^-^
