Default Kroot Background, society etc.

hey all,

so i am still working on my Tau Cadre background, and i have had thought's on writing up about one of my characters, my Kroot Shaper.

all this is a bunch about the kroot, i didn't post it on the minor races board because its more about the kroot who fight alongside the Tau than the mercs.

so i looked up the kroot background in wikipedia which told me a bit, but i still have a few questions.

1) how would i write about a young kroot, is there anything on how kroot are raised? this kinda makes up my early history of the character, which i would sort of focus on.

2) i read that kroot kindred's are like clans, who are lead by a shaper. does the clan have only one shaper, or can there by a number of them? i'm asking this becuase i have two squads of kroot and i have two shapers, but i mean them to be of the same kindred, would they have to be seperate because of the multiple shapers?

3) how does a kroot warrior come about to become a shaper?

4) how long do kroot live for? (average life expectancy), and would a shaper be quite old, or is there a possibility for there to be a quite young shaper?

5) does anybody have names of other kroot planets, apart from Pech. becuase i like my characters to be different, and not just from the home world.

6) how would a kroot kindred find itself in the service of the Tau empire? i mean do they just gather on pech, climb aboard a war-sphere and sign a contract?

thats all the questions i can think of for the momment, thank you in advance for any help you can give me

not to unusual to have more then one shaper in a clan. The greater the clan the more shapers I would imagine, and there are higher shapers above that.

I would imagine that kroot society is build around adeptness to skill. Those who can shoot, become hunter kin. Those who specialize in handling animals become knarloc herders, kroot hound wranglers etc... if a particular kroot were adept at sensory, he might be trained by the clans shapers I would imagine. Its not unusual to think the the shapers might be a strain of higher evolved kroot.

A kroot kindred woiuld be in servitude in likes of any other race. A subject from tau(insert race here) speaks to the leader of the clan, they discuss terms. Some kroot may be on permanent pay. They travel nearly everywhere, and inhabiting parts of an imperial, chaos, eldar, or ork world isnt out of the question.

With rapidly evolving kroot. Perhaps they can be seen as old even in their 20s, perhaps becoming adults in prime vastly early say 10-15? 15-20? <shrugs shoulders>. Their short lifespans spurning greater need to consume dna, and birthing them chickens, why they are able to have such genetic diversity, in short periods of time. The tau are rapid evolving troops, and doesnt seem to happen to often they live to 30-let alone 40, though that also implies regularity where some named masters live to 100+

Thanks for the links! Not to draw away from the thread, but why can Tau not use Kroot Mercs?? We sort of use them already, but only 3 types. It would be nice to be able to use this too...

There is an issue of WD, that focused on the Kroot Biology and culture...IIRC it was the issue that preceded the Wd issue with the Kroot mercenery mini-dex.

Maybe this could help answer some/all of your questions.

well, I too wouldnt mind infiltrating everything within 12 inches, and having eviscerators to boot. Then when the fodder... i mean kroot perish, I could simply clean up with the rest of my army.

Gameplay reasons no more no less. However the kroot could argue that the kindreds they send are very specialized kroot. If all their specialists were sent to the front lines of tau warfare, the kroot would never change beyond tau denizen creatures.

If they fight for other people they can keep tabs of how many of one gene type they can keep handy. And the kroot never do the full brunt of the war, they are meant to be ambushers, able to sacrifice a few kroot, to gain the genetic material they seek.

I figured it was just a fairness thing or something. We can't be out performing Marines as far as games workshop is concerned :

wikipedia is a terrible source- just ask your fellow gamer!

wish we could insert music...

Okay- so- young kroot. Well, there's only one story concerning kroot young, it's the story of Khibala Yusra. Apparently young hunters go out to prove themselves during hunts, where- on Pech at least- they fight kroot 'monsters' in the woods.

We also know their are females based on the WD article- they procreate through their sweat glands... ahem. Pheromones and different smells make up a huge amount of their communication.

A kindred seems to have one shaper which leads the families feeding pattern- these then make up a shaper council although there was another type of shaper mentioned in an apocolypse datasheet- i think it's called a hunter shaper or something.

I think the path of a Shaper is one that is a matter of birth- although this is just my assumption. In the Ciaphus Cain book the Kroot Shaper just seems to have the ability to study DNA which is akins to color if you were blind (as in-he has no way of describing it if you don't have the ability). This would tie into the tribal patterns kroot society seems to have.

I think Kroot live particularly long, i don't know why-just an opinion. However it is known that Kroot devour their dead ritually.

There's a couple different worlds- look at the Tau codex- one that's not on there is Krath which has active trading with the Tau empire.

as to how a mercenary band would join the empire- look at the inquisitor fluff for the tau water caste character. apparently they are brought back into service through negotiation. It doesn't seem like the warbands fight the empire though- not wanting to jeopardize their species relationship and safety within the empire.

thats all the questions i can think of for the momment, thank you in advance for any help you can give me

thanks for replying calmsword.

generally i've compared the kroot to the native american culture. firstly we have them living in essentially nomad tribes, that travel the jungles of pech. like the indian tribes during the french indian wars. (yes i know this had been said before but it makes a lot of sense).

i considered the idea of being shaper from birth, this would definetly make sense if kroot life expectancy was low. also, if its a trait only found in some kroot, then like the psyker they would be sought out and trained to harness their powers. however, i find that the idea of a single shaper in the kindred to be... insufficient. for example, what happens if the shaper dies? I think there are other shapers in a kindred, but only one leads the kindred, perhaps something like apprentices?

reading the codex again did answers some of my questions, i have a couple of other kroot planets that i know of.

where could i find this story about Khibala Yusra? if you can remember that would be great.
also where do i find inquisitor fluff? this stuff on the water caste sounds really interesting.

thanks for any help you can offer.

i'll keep looking- this is one version of the story

http://es.games-workshop.com/especia...rio/kroot.html

Remember that the Shaper thing seems to be exactly like the advent of the psyker evolutionary trait- so there might be only one 'great' shaper but he probably has protoges in the wings. Meanwhile the Yusra story shows that Shapers aren't always in societal control.

PS: I think Kroot live possibly hundreds of years naturally, however their life styles obviously limit that factor. Additionally, remember that the Kroot are voluntarily 'primitive' in that they're old star faring empire failed them- read their original WD fluff for more.
