Default Is Shadowsun useful as a fighter or not?

I can't see her being that great, twin linked fusion blaster and...and...oh wait, nothing.
Is she just there to buff your other units because in terms of combat skill and weapon loadout she is laughable compared to other special characters in the game.

Correction, not twinlinked fusion blasters, but the ability to fire 2 fusion shots at BS5 at either 1 target or 2 if she'd like. Pretty neat on paper, not so much in battlefield conditions. Call me back when you pop two land raiders with her in 1 turn and I might give you a cookie.

When you look at it, all of our special characters suck when compared to those of other races. The space pope is meant to provide morale support and somehow a CC ability. Instead he will likely get mowed over by something stupid and force your army to start running and suddenly the price paid has amounted to far more than it should have. Farsight kicks one in the junk just by even thinking about him if you take multiples of the more abstract units and care about ethereals or auxiliary units. His bodyguard gets very expensive very fast and his free bonding knives is about as spectacular as glowsticks at a political party.
And Shadowsun is basically an ethereal in pretend with a little bit of defensive punch. At least she gives leadership 10 to nearby units, forming a bubble of general reassurance to that degree. At least when she dies your army doesn't head for the hills. Probably the better of the special characters, I would still prefer the Shas'O fully tooled for destruction.

So...what did we do to the people at GW to make them give us crappy characters?

We did not buy enough space marines.

I wouldn't mind our special characters if we had more options for them.

I'd like some new special characters from the auxiliary races, that would easily compensate in my opinion.

Shadowsun's a 'counter-charge' unit, not a spearhead. Hang her around near your firebase and see who wants to step up and face the fusion. And then, when you see them, charge ur lazors.

She's not a great fighter, no. But Ld 10. 10. I feel this has been understated.

Combo with an ethereal, and you can choose whether to use Ld 10 and reroll failures (for morale from shooting, and rallying) or to use Ld 7 and reroll successes (for dying in ER fleeing from assault). Combat tactics!

In some weird way i really hate you Pseudomancer.
Everytime I read your posts i feel the need to test your ideas and tactics...
Now I have to use an Etheral + Shadowsun in my next match, thanks!

I like shadowsun, 3 wounds high save, three drones to take a few more wounds so essentially a 6 wound model with armor save of 3+ and an invulnerable save of 4+. Twin fusion blaster that can be in dependantly fired, JSJ ability, and Deepstrike? Sounds like the anti marine queen to me.

I tried that a couple of months ago. It was the only game I've ever played where I didn't have morale problems! While the morale benefits were great, it came at the cost of quite a bit of firepower. Shadowsun herself has quite a bit, but at the pitiful range of fusion blasters I never used it.

I agree with Pseudomancer's opinion on how to use her. She is designed to hold a static gunline together, and to charge forward to stop the carnifex, landraider, or similar monstrosity that is about to break through the formation and kill everything.

Meh, shadowsun is a pile of poop. Yay LD10? So does a ShasO :P Gove him the 12" thing and it's almost the same thing.

She's a unit becuase she's spoilt and received a lot of drones from her father, therefore she'll get shot to pieces, then she's also only t3 (I think).. one plasma cannon and shes gone.

Twi fusion blasters may look good on paper but they;re only 12".. If you're that close then you're more less dead already :P
