Default buying old already constructed armies

I am interested in buying old armies on ebay (and elsewhere) and getting my own.
though I would start with Tau.

I won this auction:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=150309182071

which included:
This army consists of 2 Hammerhead gunships, 1 Devilfish troop transport, , 1 Broadside Battlesuit, 3 Stealth Battlesuits, 3 squads of 12 Firewarriors, 1 squad of 13 Kroot including a metal Kroot Shaper and two interesting conversions.

I paid $356 including shipping

good price? fair market price? bad price? ugly price? >

what is a good way of determining a reasonable value of any warhammer army that is for sale?
any advice/general rules of thumb?

If it wasn't for the paint job, you overpaid. It's a very nicely painted army, which helps the value by a lot.

It's a good price. You can tell by comparing to the gw website.

I think you made out ok. It's a fairly complete army and you just need some battlesuits and maybe a squad of pathfinders. It seems a little pricey but considering that you wont have to assemble them or paint them then I think you made out pretty darn well. Not bad... Great paint job.

Me personally I'd never actually buy miniatures that someone else had assembled and painted. But y'know, to each his own. Good job!

I got pretty much my whole army off ebay :P Its a whole lot cheaper than GW prices!!

I find it best to work out what you want and buy it a unit/model at a time - this works out cheaper than buying a whole army in one go - and you get the chance of some bargins!

My favourite purchase was a GW army case that I bid for and won, it cost me 12 pounds - When it arrived I opened it up and discovered there was about 800 Pts worth of Eldar Aspect Warriors, Autarchs and a Falcon inside it! (Which were not mentioned in the add!).

Here is the army I won last week:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=260313527020

If bought retail it would be $850 according to GW's site. Pretty good deal since most of it is still in the boxes. Of course if I bought the Cadre and added a bunch of suits vespid, etc. then it would be about $675.

Both were good deals I think; but why buy them premade and prepainted? Making them and painting them is all part of the fun!

About the only thing I was unhappy with was the Crisis Suits, but hopefully I will be able to reposition them some.
