Default Shield drones

I am sure this subject has been beat to death...

What do you folks do about shield drones? I am starting up a tau army after having not played tau in years. I just found out that GW doesn't have easy to get shield drone models.

Do most folks convert them or use the GW kits?

I just pull the guns off of a gun drone and call it a shield drone. Even at 'ard boyz nobody had a problem with that.

I'm thinkin' about just pulling the guns off my gun drones as well. I need a bunch of shield drones because I've fallen in love with them all over again now that I've learned how to abuse wound allocation! ;D

A CONVERT!!!! Welcome to the fold, Jedi. ;D

I was starting to think I was the only one in here that uses Shield Drones.

But you've figured out the wound allocation system, though. So you know why we use them.

Yeah, shield drones are actually incredibly usefull in when you know how to work the wound allocation system. At first glance it seemed that they'd become obsolete. I'll be honest I was very vocal about feeling this way. However, after a few conversations with a guy I know who works at my local GW I figured out a way to taylor his method of using shield drones in large expensive units with my method of taking lots of relatively small and cost effective units. I've found a nice space somewhere in the middle and it's somewhat devestating.

this is the reason I use Gun Drones, 2 mores wounds to a Monta. But is there something I have not figured out if there are 3 wounds to allocate? Someone explain this so I don't think I'm missing something here, haha.

Most likely, there will be ap3 or better weapons trying to kill your suit. If you allocate more than 1 wound, you start losing gun drones automatically. Shield Drones allow for the invuln save, AND have a save equal to the suit, not the standard drone save. It makes the suit WAY more survivable vs. the nasty weapons of the universe.

Not to mention the addition of the equal toughness to the unit they're with. A very useful thing with XV-8 (And it's varients) and XV-88 units. So if you have one model, with two Shield Drones, the majority toughness remains at 4. But if you have two Gun Drones instead, then the majority toughness is 3, and so you'll take more wounds easilly.

The wound alication is pretty good with shield drones. You put your instant-kill hits and AP3 or greater on the drones, allowing your sutis to survive to shoot back. I always take at least 1 Shield Drone in all of my XV units, allowing the unit to get an invulnerable save and an extra wound.

Does the majority rule still exist in 5th I thought it was like: once a model is diffrent it is rolled separate. So only the to hit rolls are made together and the wounding and saving is separate so they use their own T and Sv values.

The shield drones are still far superior as you don't have to rely on cover to always get a save. Also the 3+ save is very nice >
