Default Commander loadout

How do you use you commander?

Suit-wise I only ever fielded the commander +2 and another squad of 3. I used the commander as a firebase and the other as a suicide deepstrike squad to kill troops and vehicles.

Honestly, I field the commander and his retinue as essentially leading the charge. A jack-of-all-trades, with each one of them able to waste vehicles and +2 saves. Not to mention I've had my Commander survive being assaulted countless times while dealing back the damage.

My commander is configured as a Fireknife/Helios with shield and hardwired multitracker (I have more weapons and gizmos on him than I can actually use, so I vary depending on what I need).

@Wild: 2+ saves? I think you're a little off there... Only broadsides have 2+, or whoever you give the iridium armor to. (special issue, can only give it to one person.)

No kane, shooting-wise. Able to waste both vehicles and +2 armor saves.

I think he is saying they can waste vehicles or TEQ's (equipped with things like Plasma Rifles or Fusion Blasters), not that they actually have 2+ saves. At least that's what I hope he's saying ;D

I equip my Commander Depending on what army I am Fighting - Different layouts work for different opponents - One thing I equip pretty much every time in 5th is the Positional Relay. - Best piece of wargear the Tau have!

Another layout I like is a Shas'O with Cyclic Ion Blaster, Stimulant Injector and Shield Generator (the 3rd hardpoint can either be filled with Drone controller or Vectored Retro Thrusters depending on your preference). The Ion Blaster is a gamblers weapon but can be awesome if the dice gods love you - the plus point of this layout is he is damn hard to kill! And can do wonders holding up a unit in CC when it threatens your lines.

Well It depends..on which ocmmander you are talking about.

Usually I use my Sunforge suit with my Fireknife (spl) bodyguard as Jack-of-all-Trade to deal with a variety of enemy.

Then again they are always support by an Anti-MEQ and one Anti-GEQ XV-8 squad.

But i also got my weaponless Commander who'se goal is to help deepstriking unit as well as commander shadowsun.

That's close to what I put in GF. I just put the Fusion Blaster in with the CIB as well. My other two are modified Helios suits, both carrying the Shield Generator, but one with the Airburster and Fusion Blaster, the other as normal. What I enjoy is that they can hunt isolated units and come out on top. Sometimes with a little support even monstrous creatures, or if the dice REALLY love me without support.

I personally keep my commander (M'ye'Nars'O) equipped to kill TEQs (which my army lacks the ability to kill). The best configuration for this is Plasma Rifle + Cyclonic Ion Blaster. I additionally give him a shield generator, stims, iridium armor, and a shield drone, making him a very very VERY hard unit to kill. Once brought a jetbike and spear toting autarch down to 1 wound left in assault.

Yeah but in 5th Ed he's more of a pointsink now.

Iridium armour and Stims isn't as useful anymore since Ap2 and AP1 ignores FNP...so as soon as your opponent realises you are Sv 2+/4+ all he needs to do is pump you with plasma and fusion and your Iridium and stims are useless.

The Shiled gen is still a good option though.
