Default Are Forgeworld Tau Models allowed in regular 40k games?

Sorry for the noob question, I was wondering though can we use things like heavy gun drones in normal warhammer games? Or are forgeworld an unofficial kind of addon thing?

well:

If you have the rules (official ones) for them you may use them in freindlies provided
Your opponent knows you are using it
You have their permission to use them
And
You have their rules

In tournaments its all up to the tournie organiser, check that one out before making your list ;D

Forgeworld stuff occupies a level of legality between Vehicle Design Rules and Special Characters. *They are official, but only barely. Tournaments will often not allow them, but it is usually fine for friendly games.

Robogem:

It's not a "noob" question, it's a very good question. Before spending hundreds of dollars on something from forgeworld, it's a very good idea to know that they're generally only acceptable in friendly games, on a permission basis. For example, if you were to field a Baneblade super heavy tank, your opponent could say "Um, no." and then it will not be fielded. In a tournament, you can already expect a hearty "No, sorry" for an answer.

In casual gaming, it's generally going to be ok, but some forgeworld rules and models will cause hesitation as they're not truly balanced with 40k in mind. Generally if one person has forgeworld models out, using rules, it's a good idea for both of you to have them so it's fair both ways (though this is not really possible for everyone).

The normal game, anything goes that you and your opponents agree to. You can use house rules, anything. It's only in the big sanctioned events that you'll find these things are not permitted. If you like the models and the rules, then go for it. But know that you probably won't be winning tournaments with them. But you can easily find yourself using them against your opponents who don't mind them (and really they're fun to have new things to try out that aren't way-over-simplified like GW's current stance on our game).

It is also becoming a much better question as Forgeworld makes smaller and cheaper units. Back when it was a question of fielding Titans and Thunderhawks, Forge World stuff rarely saw the table. Their new Tau stuff is much more balanced, though, and fits in with other 40k units pretty well.

I'd buy ForgeWorld stuff and substitute it for Games Workshop models in a friendly. Looks nice but is expensive, but you always have the option of using the FW rules as well.

I don't think you can use them at GW stores or Official Tournaments though, but I'm not certain.

You have to ask the Tournie organiser for the answer to the second one Espi0N

an you can use them in GW stores for games if its friendly and your opponent says "yes"
