Default [BatRep] Annihilation, Tau vs 4th Ed. Space Marines, 750pts.

This is my first battle report, so I hope it isn't too bad.

A Space Marine player at my local club invited me to a battle, this was a great oppertunity to try out my Tau against what they were designed to kill - MEQs.

My opponent didn't have the new Marine Codex, so we just used the 4[sup]th[/sup] Ed. rules.

Space Marines
Master - 141pts
  • Boltgun
  • Lightning Claw
  • Iron Halo
  • Terminator Honours

Terminators - 225pts
  • 3x Power Fist, Storm Bolter
  • Power Fist, Heavy Flamer
  • Seargent - Power Fist, Storm Bolter

3x Tactical Squad - 86pts each, 258pts total
  • 3x Bolters
  • Flamer
  • Seargent - Bolt Pistol, CCW

Devastators - 115pts
  • 2x Bolters
  • 2x Missile Launchers
  • Seargent - Bolt Pistol, CCW
Total: 739pts


Tau
Commander - 272pts
  • 2x Shas'vre - Twin-linked Plasma Rifle, Targetting Array
  • Shas'o
  • Missile Pod
  • Plasma Rifle
  • Vectored Retro Thrusters (house rule allows him to take them in a squad, but only use it alone)
  • Hard-wired Drone Controller - Shield Drone
  • Hard-wired Multi-tracker

Crisis Team - 206pts
  • 2x Fusion Blaster, Plasma Rifle
  • Team Leader
  • Fusion Blaster
  • Twin-linked Plasma Rifle
  • Hard-wired Multi-tracker

Fire Warrior Team 1 - 90pts
  • 5x Pulse Rifles
  • Shas'ui - Markerlight, Bonding Knife, Hard-wired Multi-tracker

Fire Warrior Team 2 - 95pts
  • 5x Pulse Rifles
  • Shas'ui - Bonding Knife, Hard Wired Drone Controller - 2 Gun Drones

Vespid Strain - 70pts
  • 2x Vespid Stingwings
  • Strain Leader
Total: 733pts


Deployment
My opponent won the roll & chose to go 1[sup]st[/sup], the rolled the game to be Annihilation using the Dawn of War deployment.

His Terminators & my Crisis Team were kept in reserve.



Turn 1
Space Marines
Moving: Everything apart from the Devastators move forward.
Shooting: The Devastators fire 2 Frag missiles at Fire Warrior Team 2, destroying 2 Gun Drones & killing a Fire Warrior. Nothing else was in range.

Tau
Fire Warrior team rolled a 7 for their morale check, passing it.
Moving: Everything other than Fire Warrior Team 1 moved towards Space Marine Squad 1.
Shooting: The Vespid open fire on Tactical Squad 1, killing 2. Fire Warrior Team 2 also rapid fires at them, killing another.
Fire Warrior Team 1 Markerlights & single shots Tactical squad 2, failing to kill any but landing a markerlight hit on them. The command team then unleshes their full firepower - the Shas'vre using the Markerlight to gain BS5 - wiping out the entire squad.
Assault: The suits jump back behind the tower. The Vespid charge the remenents of Tactical Squad 1, killing 1 but sustaining a casualty in return.



Turn 2
Space Marines
The Terminators fail to arrive.
Movement: Tactical Squad 3 moves toward Fire Warrior Team 2.
Shooting: Tactical Squad 3 rapid fires Fire Warrior Team 2, killing another 1.
The Devastators fire Frags at Fire Warrior Team 1, causing 7 wounds & killing 3.
Assault: The Vespid manage to slay the seargant, consolidating towards the Commander.

Tau
The Crisis team arrives, & deepstrikes right by the Devastators without scattering.
Fire Warrior Team 1 just passes their morale check, with another 7.
Movement: The Vespid race ahead to the Commander, while Fire Warrior Team 2 moves to the last Tactical Squad.
The command team jumps on top of the tower, & the Shas'o recieves a wound from a failed Dangerous Terrain check.
Shooting: The Helios team unleash hell & kill every Devastator with their wonderful AP1&2 weaponry.
The Vespid & the Shas'o's team fire at the Commander, but fail to do anything thanks to his 4+ invulnerable save.
Fire Warrior Team 1 & 2 both fire at the final Tactical squad, but do no damage.
Assault: The Shas'o & his team jump off the building toward the Tactical Squad.
The Vespid then charge the Master (sounds like Dr. Who or something... :shifty:), but don't hurt him & recieve another dead for their efforts. The leader then passes his following morale check.



Turn 3
Space Marines
The Terminators arrive (a little too late) & deepstrike right by the left-hand edge of the board, scattering a lucky 2 inches toward it (another 1 & it would've been off).
Shooting: The Terminators let rip & leave the Shas'ui of Fire Warrior Team 2 the last man standing.
The Tactical Squad, noting that it wouldn't be worth it to pursue that last Fire Warrior, shoot at the Shas'o, doing nothing.
Assault: The Strain leader dies in a way too spectacular to comprehend. In other words, he's hit by a lightning claw. The Commander then consolidates away from the Helios suits.

Tau
The Shas'ui fails his morale check & flees a meager 4 inches.
Moving: The Helios team chases after the Master, while the Shas'o closes in on the Tactical Squad.
Shooting: The Fire Warriors fire at the Terminators, doing nothing but plant a Markerlight on them.
The Shas'o's team attack the Tactical Squad, reducing their number to zero.
The Helios team catches their prey & annihilates the Master, leaving nothing but a pile of smouldering ashes in their wake.
Assault: The Helios suits move toward their final target, while the Shas'o's team jumps back to the tower.



Turn 4
Space Marines
Shooting The Terminators, in a last ditch attempt to sway the battle, fire at the one leading the enemy; their leader. Nothing happens. _

Tau
The Shas'ui uses his Bonding Knife & passes his regroup check.
Moving: Everyone other than Fire Warrior Team 1 move toward the Terminators.
Shooting: Fire Warrior Team 1 manage to plant a Markerlight on the Terminators.
The Shas'ui of what used to be Fire Warrior Team 2 somehow manages to kill a Terminator with a perfectly placed shot.
The Helios move in & utterly eradicate the rest of them.



Result
1 Kill Point to 6.

I feel that was successful as a tryout of my MEQ hunter army. I might try out some more tactical approaches in future, as there was quite a lot that could've gone wrong in this. If the Terminators had arrived on Turn 2, then I would have been sorely outnumbered, & even my excess of low-AP weaponry would not have been able to cope with that. The Helios could easily have not killed all the Devastators, & then would've recieved a Krak Missile the next turn (I've lost count of the amount of times my Shas'o's been incapacitated by a simple Krak missile).

I have to say though, the heroes of this match have to be my Helios team, every time they fired they caused total destruction of their target. Most of the other times I've used them they've done a reasonable amount of damage (usually killing a Dark Reaper squad belonging to an Eldar player I sometimes face), but then get wiped out in the following turn. This time, however, there was nothing that could fire at or charge them, as the Commander was stuck in CC & the Marines had much bigger problems to face.

Was your opponent not using the Fifth edition codex though?
