Default Crisis Commander 1+

Does anyone have a problem with the crisis commander being 1+? I know its a silly thing to say as they are awsome but sometimes I'd like to field an army devoid of battlesuits. Just wondering if I was the only one.

take a helios for Deepstriking tank poping love i know i like to run very crisis heavy but i think you should always have 1 crisis suit

No you're not the only one I sometimes wish it too.

I'm sure you could as well if you wanted to do it in a friendly game, can't see anyone objecting to you have an ethereal for them to shoot at.

Not really considering the logic.

The Fire Caste are the nations soldiers, their sole/main purpose in life is to fight for that Tau. furthermore suits are awarded to Fire Warriors that has provent themselves in combat to improve their chance of survival and hit their opponents harder...and since every army needs a leader, it makes perfect sense that the Commander is a 1+.

Now what about the Ethereal you might ask (well in 3rd ed he was a 0-1 btw)...well aside the usual gripe about it's uselessness in combat; Ethereal are more of a Religious/State power, They are in charge of running things and make sure the Tau society doesn't go into the crapper. Some might show up on the battle field to bolster the courage of the warriors; but they are not there to lead.

Now if we were to have flyers in the army I could see a Ko'el or Ko'O present to coordinate the airstrike as a support HQ though.

oh fluffwise I agree we need to have firecaste commanders, the ethereals shouldn't even be at the battlefield. You don't take someone that important to a place where people get shot at. But on the gaming front, I'd like to not have a crisis commander.

Although I have never fielded my army,
I don't own a single size 8 battlesuit,
no crisis or broadsides whatsoever,

I find them ugly and refuse to have any...

(although I do have Shadowsun as a commander.)

this does raise the question;

can Tau be a viable force without the larger battlesuits?
(if it was legal?)

like the others, i agree that fluffwise, you would always have a shas'El or 'O and never have ethereals on a battlefield.

but, with an ethereal as your compulsory commander, you could have the equivalent of an imperial tank company. stuff everything in a fish, and watch your opponent's frustration when he realises their anti-infantry guns are next to useless.

I would like the option to take a commander in a different sort of suit, or not in a suit. My expectation is that the next codex will put commanders in a new variant suit unuseable by the rest of the army, making it a better option than it is now.

Along the same lines of Khanaris, I would like a commander to have the option to be fielded not in a crisis suit with those BS 4 honor guards as a bodygaurd option with this set up.
