Default 500 Point Game

One of my friends, who I introduced 40k to, plays space wolves. Since he's still building his army he wants to play me but on a 500 point level. I play tau with a variety of available models. However, I'm sceptical that this is entirely fair.??? Since he's liable to throw a dreadnought, rune priests, and a few squads of marines (termies if he can) at me, I'm really not quite sure what would be appropriate to play against him.

Any suggestions?

I think playing Combat Patrol is the best option. it's 400 points and limits the wounds and saves available. I've been playing it as an introduction to 40K and it seems to work really well. 500 points with no limitations would get a bit out of balance I think.

Welcome to the forums if you haven't already been greeted. Don't forget to read the rules and all that kinda stuff

500 point game verses space wolves huh? Well I have never played space wolves but have played plenty of space marine armies to know general tactics.Terminators and a dreadnought in 500 points? He's not going to have very many models. SO here is what my list would be: Kinda of a static list but it's only 500 points so:

Shas'El-plasma rifle, missile pod, multi-tacker 85 points
Firewarriors- (10) Shas'ui, markerlight 120 points
Firewarriors- (10) Shas'ui, markerlight 120 points
HammerHead-ion cannon, burst cannons, multi-tracker, decoy launchers, pair of gun drones 165 points
505 points
The squads stand back in cover shooting their pulse rifles and marker lights into needed areas (dreadnought/terminators) so you can hit on a 2+ and kill them. The first thing you should do with your drones on the hammer head is to detach them from the ship and run them as a separate squad. If your opponent wants to he can waste his shots off in them while protecting your more valuable components, while they are annoying as they can pin squads and burst that rear armor on that dreadnought.

Another list you can use is:
Shas'el- plasmas rifle, missile pod, multi-tracker 85 points
Shas'ui- plasma rifle, missile pod, multi-tracker 65 points
Shas'ui- plasma rifle, missile pod, multi-tracker 65 points
Shas'ui- plasma rifle, missile pod, multi-tracker 65 points
Firewarriors- (9) shas'ui, markerlight 110 points
Firewarriors- (9) shas'ui, markerlight 110 points
500 points exactly. The firewarriors also stand back markerlight anything important for the suits to fire at. The plasma will take care of anything just be smart with the suits and pop them back behind cover so they don't take shots. They missile pods have a pretty good chance to blow up the dreadnought but don't rely on it try to get a side armor shot with the missile pods as you have way more mobility. hmmm, against the marines. Well, as spice wesal said, 500 pts dosent seem to work well so you should be playing CP.

However, since you asked about 500 pts, here it goes

8 FW (1 is a sushi) 90
8 FW (1 is a sushi) 90
El Fireknife w/ MT 85
Broadside w/ SMS and MT 75
Ion Head with SMS, MT, LT, DL 160

That would be a good way to go IMO.

The HH and the BS will take out most of the enemies you will come across, where the FW will take out simply the troops. Perhaps a light vehicle. As for the El, well, he can do it all!

i find that there are 2 main strategies for combating marines,

their saves are one of their biggest advantages, so you can either take these away or make ur them take lots of them.
with 500 points its gonna be hard to do either but i think a good combo of both should be good.

you can always try the

12 fw + fish = 200
12 fw + fish = 200
Fireknife 'el = 85

and play around with spare points to fit a markerlite n a couple of seekers in there

Dont forget you have to have 2 troop choices and an HQ so that wouldnt work. My list(s) are pretty cheezy i guess.

Just a note, if he is seriously going to bring a rune priest, dreadnought and two squads of troops, he'll be at his 500 point mark even if he's scraping the barrel here. You should have no problem at all knowing he probably will only have 15~16 models.

All you need for that dreadnought is twin-linked missile pods on an XV8.
Stealthsuits or big chunks of Kroot will do wonderful against the Grey Hunter and/or Blood Claws.
Whatever is left over can break that Rune Priest if he bothers with one.

You shouldn't see any terminators, but if you do, completely bare bones.

Here's a couple of options to make prey of what you said he's fielding quite easily:

    HQ - Shas'el; Missile Pods; Plasma Rifle; Multi-tracker (85)
    Troop - Fire Warriors x 12; Shas'ui; Devilfish; Decoy Luanchers (215)
    Troop - Kroot x 14 (98)

    Otherwise, you could take the Suit route:

    HQ - Shas'el; Missile Pods; Plasma Rifle; Multi-tracker (85)
    Elite - XV15 x 6 (180)
    Troop - Fire Warriors x 8; Shas'ui (90)
    Troop - Kroot x 20 (140)

    Another option:

    HQ - Shas'el; Twin-linked Missile Pods; Plasma Rifle; Hardwired Multi-tracker (97)
    Elite - XV8 Crisis; Twin-linked Missile Pods; Target Lock (56)
    Troop - Fire Warriors x 8; Shas'ui (90)
    Troop - Kroot x 14 (98)
    Heavy - Hammerhead; Ion Cannon; Smart Missile Systems; Multi-tracker; Decoy Launchers; Target Lock (160)

Anyhow - all you need to do is know that he will have expensive small squads if he takes the units you listed and your firepower will easily saturate them, or overwhelm them with volume from a kroot volley or charge.

If you notice, alot of us are suggesting the 160 pt IONhead. Well Seraphim, thats because it his highly capable of killing marines. Not to mention dreadnots. But I would definatly have to say in a small game like this, the Ionhead is the way to go.

MalVeaux's "Another Option" list with the Ion and Crisis was a very good one. I suggest using that one for your opponent!
