Well, there are the Kroot and the Vespid as legal choices still. There are chapter-approved rules for Gue'vesa (Guardsmen). In fluff there is also the niccasar, but we don't have rules for them yet.

Dark ace cipher allies are correct. There also are the demurring but those do not have rules in 40k yet.

We're kinda on our own in a galactic sense... we're the most powerful friend we have. It isn't like the, say, Eldar, love the Tau and help them out sometimes. We find weirdos normally exterminated by the Imperium and try to co-opt their useful bits for us.

Technically you can have a lot of allies. The Eldar, the Imperial Guard and the Space Marines have all at one point or another fought alongside the Tau. However, all of these cases were during situations that were appropriately dire. I know the one involving the Ultra Marines happened because they were actually fighting one another and in their fighting they awakened a Necron tomb world. They ended up calling a truce so that they could fight off the greater threat that the Necrons faced. It was actually a shining example of fighting for the Greater Good really and it was what ended up causing Marneus Calgar to have the grudging respect that he holds for the Tau.

Of course dont think that this means that these forces are by any means friends. They will really only fight side by side in the case of a Tyrannid hive fleet invasion, a Daemonic incursion or something equally apocolyptic. Otherwise they'll be at each others throats until the end of time.

You mean "Perform Eldar tactics better than Eldar", right? :P
Not unless the Eldar have an obscure Warrior Aspect that revolves around the complete mastery of the common light bulb.

Also, the farsight enclaves have worked as mercenaries, so it is possible to have a Tau force fighting alongside all manner of races. You'd have to follow all of the unit restrictions in the rule "Breakaway Faction" to not screw fluff over, but it is possible.

Such races likely to employ mercenaries are the Imperial Guard, Orks, Eldar, Dark Eldar, and possibly Chaos Space Marines.

Fluff or not, you can have an army have virtually any ally, just need a good story/background of why they're allied, those very unlikely groupings such as SM and CSM would need an amazing story.

Maybe in Apocalypse... But in normal 40k you can't just decide to "ally up" with anyone.
