Default Independent characters, how good are they

I keep hearing IC are wonderful and fantabulous and stuff, and we should hang on to them at all times. How true is this!?!

Very true as if played properly your IC can't be shoot at all the time so you can have very shooty unit that can't be shoot back.

Yes independent characters are great. Like Rogan said if an independent character is not the closest unit your oppenent can see then he cant shoot at it at all. So your lord is immune unitl the squad in front of him is destroyed or somehow he is the closest unit. So all you have to do is stand back and shoot and your ok.

But if you join him with a unit and the unit gets shot he suffers from majority toughness/save if he joins a weaker unit. Lets say he has a body guard and the bodyguard gets shot he has to run with the body guard if they suffer from under 50% starting strength.

every topic related to bodyguards and keeping models alive

So if you join him with bodyguards, he counts as any other crisis unit. Leadership test for shooting through units, flee as usual.
Why would GW create something like that(?), this doesn't count for retinues(orks and marines). 8)

GW wanted to shaft the only good army (Tau). JK... I have no idea why they did that. Just keep your IC behind 3 Broadsides with 2 Sheild Drones each and he will last the entire game.

He would, but then you usually can't max out the use of his BS4or5. But the tactic is generally good on small tables.

I am just saying do that if you want to live. If you just want to kick @ss go for a Shas'O with MP, PR, Flamer or FB, and a HWMT.
