Default with or with out a devilfish?

I was just wondering weather or not to use devilfishes. And if so how many would be an optimal choice?

Using devilfishes depends on how you play Tau. If you're looking at having a mechanized and mobile army(mech tau), definately, lots of devilfishes, if not giving each firewarrior squad one. If you play static Tau (units just stand and shoot), devilfishes probably won't be used as much, and so you wouldn't need as many..

I'm looking at playing Mech Tau, so i'm getting a devilfish per squad of firewarriors, before that, I didn't have any because my firewarriors were largely just static

No matter what type of tau you are playing, it is always nice to have 2 devilfish. While one can be useful (lets say for a squad of pathfinders) it is hard to use with a single squad of firewarriors. I would recommend getting two to start out with, learn to play with pathfinders and firewarriors, and then build up to 3; one for PF's, two for the firewarriors. If you want a very tank heavy army, you could go for an 1850 list with 5 devilfish .

I agree with everyone else, you should always have a devilfish or two, preferably a devilfish for the majority if not all of the firewarrior groups. with only a 6 inch movement, they won't be able to stay out of combat for long, and if they have a fish then they can go where they are needed at double speed.

MechTau is the only form of Tau

Devilfishes are manditory, but I wouldnt be using more than 2 maybe 3 fish Squads in 1500pts anyway :P

In a 1500, go with two fish w/ 6-12 firewarriors mounted (I like using 12) and then one more if you use pathfinders, they can be quite useful.

Whatever the case, the devilfish is useful. Both for getting FW to their destination(mission objectives mainly), for tankshocking, FoF, and the seekers.

Include 2 to 4 I say 8)

Never 4 fish. That last fish (I'm assuming it has firewarriors in it) will not be very effective on it's own; always play devilfish in pairs.
