I played a 40k in 40 minutes last nignt against my brother and I had an absurdly large maxed out kroot squad with 7 kroot hounds. They failed a morale check with 11 kroot and no kroot hounds surviving.
Could they have regrouped, as there were more than half the kroot from the troops selection slot, but the total squad size (with the kroot and hounds) was under half.

If you had a maxed out squad of 20 Kroot with 7 Hounds, you have 27 models, making the starting strength 27 models. Regrouping based on models and 50% is based on this starting strength as they are a single unit even though they are comprised of different units on the force organizational chart--this is simply how Kroot work in the Tau codex.
If you had 11 Kroot left over and they failed moral, they will never re-group. This is below 50% starting strength of 27 models.

Frank:
You can only have a maximum of 20 Kroot Carnivores in the troop selection of them. However, if you purchase more Hounds (multiple units even) they automatically are attached to the Kroot Carnivores, forming a single squad. They are a single squad in all other terms and their initial model count of the entire squad is what is used to determine 50% strength and below, as well as moral checks of the 25% nature.

yes, but I wouldnt advise this as it becomes insanely hard to fit them all in cover, and kroot need a cover save to live.
moral : keep it at 20 including hounds unless you know the Board has a big enough terrain peice.

You can add even more than that. Just because you have a single Troop selection of Kroot won't stop you from adding two Fast attack selections of hounds to it, for a massive 38 model squad. So long as you don't add more Hounds or Oxen to the squad than it initially consisted of, you can go at it. As Dizzy put it though - it's not the best of ideas. Really though, larger squad sizes just make your squad less and less worth while taking in my opinion. Having 38 models in a squad means that on the 20th casualty, the rest of my models are now worthless as they can never regroup and don't score or anything. That's 18 bodies who are now totally useless. If they never break moral, then that's great, but all those points just to allow us to take 20 casualties before becoming a non-scoring unit seems pretty pointless for their initial cost. Squads this big require cover to even make it alive, or those 20 casualties come very, very fast. And in terms of cover, very difficult to fit them in it completely, even with majority rules and cover.

Thanks for answering my question MalVeauX.
I have been testing different things and have came to the same conclusions about squad size, sometimes even twenty kroot are difficult to hide. And without cover, they make nice bolter targets shiver.

you only need to get majority in cover though, 15 Kroot in cover and 5 out is fine, 10 is getting a bit iffy :P, hiding 15 of the Kroot is easy :P
