Default Fish of Fury and Return Fire

So, with Fish of Fury, if you get into Rapid Fire range, and then shoot, and in the next turn, the bad guys have to assault the 'fish, they can just return fire on your FWs, can't they?

Yes, instead of assaulting the fish they could elect to shoot the fire warriors, who would get cover save from the 'fish (I guess).

Do they have to use the landing gear to get the cover save? And if the Fish does use the landing gear (in the move phase), can the Fire Warriors still shoot under it?

Can only use landing gear if you dont move,

They'll get a cover save as they're shooting through one of your units.

You have to plan your fish of fury carefully, isolate targets and destroy them one at a time, plan ahead, think what your threats will be once you've killed your target :P

I was led to believe that Skimmers now always deny LOS, and so precludes the FOF--is this not true anymore, and was what I heard more of a rumor?

Skimmers don't block LoS like normal, as they are required to be on stands. Now if you were from above looking down then yes it would. It's all about angling. As for our skimmers, if they have Landing gear, they land on the ground and therefore deny LoS like a regular tank.

from what I heard at my local GW, don't use FoF if you can avoid it.
People apparently are sick of Tau using this strategy.

I agree, which is rather strange:

A) It is not unbeatable - you can down the transport first, or shoot the squad after it disembarked.

B) Eldar could pull it off WAAAAY better.

Still, in 5th, FoF isn`t viable anymore: With true LOS, most Skimmers actually block LOS - unless you use 3-6" high stands, which is not really advisable.

Cheers,
-Bone

I still am of the opinion that troops can laydown to shoot under the fish. In the rule bookit says that kneeling troops can still shoot over barriers so I feel that the reverse should also be true, standing troops can shoot under things. Even if this is not strictly the rules that's what house rules are for.

Fish of fury has always been vulnerable to return fire.

Thing is the fish of fury is supposed to kill or maim the enemy really and not be in assult range is the point. My secret with it is I put crouching firewarriors in the middle so they can see under the devilfishes landing gear.

This actually sounds like a bunch of bad people. I mean its a good tactic but there are things way more broken. I Mean actually I have heard of similar things to do with noise marines but it has a longer range. and can do it then pull out in a rhino. I mean the devilfish is a lot easier to kill in close combat. My objective holding devilfish tactic they would call pure cheese then.
