Default Why buy a skyray?

for the amount of points it costs, wouldnt it be better to get the equivelant in seeker missiles attached on pirahnas or hammerheads or such?

Well, there are definitely some pros to it, and worth trying I suppose.

Its the only AV13/12/10 BS4 Markerlight platform the Tau have, and its got two of them (Not counting apoc)

For its base cost, you get 6 seeker missiles, and 2 networked markerlights, good armor and speed. Anyone with a codex and a bit of math skills can figure out the end result is cost and notice its a good deal. Now the only downsides is again it's limited payload, lack of railgun for a heavy slot and whatnot. Yeah, seeker missiles can be found elsewhere, but this one can at least cover itself as well.

I will be fair though, in most cases I will take a Railhead instead. Delicious pie plate.

It also counts as an AA platform.

Well it depends on what you mean by: Why buy Skyray?

The skyray box gives you also a hammerhead and your devilfish...so the box is a good investement.

As for the unit...MDRedeemer pretty much made a good case for it so I won't repeat what he said. The one thing I will add is that a Seeker missle on a devilfish. piranha and hammerhead cost points (10 per missile IIRC)...the basic 6 on a sky ray are 'Free' and I'm pretty sure you can add 2 more as wargear. So a Skyray is a good investment...if you want seekers.

That's because it was designed (fluffwise) to be an AA platform.

It really is a good deal, and cheaper than a Hammerhead too. The missiles are ideal for working with pathfinders.

Unfortunately I do not think the Skyray can take the additional wargear missiles for this reason. The allowed upgrades to be taken for the hammerhead state it can take any, while the Skyray's entry states which pieces of wargear can be taken, and seekers aren't listed. If im wrong, please correct me, but this seems to be the case.

well i would take a skyray cuz of the markerlights and the sms.even if all your seekers are gone u can still move around marking target and shooting some targets. i think it is worth it. imho

Could be it's been a while since I read that bit of my codex (I rarely use tanks)...and I'm at work.

Well if you don't glue in the top 'turret' and the burst cannon, you can switch around between a Devilfish, a hammer head and Skyray...there was a sticky somewhere about this. I'll look it up.
