Default Positional Relay - What is it?

I'm a little confused. The codex says that the positional relay does something for Deep Striking, but WHAT? How does it work?

This is one confusing thing... :'(

It actually works for reserve unit (Deep stike and otherwise). It simply allow you to bring 1 unit per turn with greater chance of success then what the Chart in the rule book gives you.

Now the only thing is that in 5th ed I don't recall if you need to roll on the reserve chart like you had to in 4th ed rhough.

In all situations, you have to roll to see if you can bring in a model by deepstrike, with chance that increases as the turns pass. The PosRe allows you to bring in 1 unit from reserve earlier at a higher chance, at the expense of not being able to bring in the rest of the reserve that turn.

Its very useful as you have a high chance of bringing in the one unit that counts from turn 2 onwards. Couple it with the Marker Beacon ability of a Pathfinder fish, that means a very precise deepstrike at a higher chance of landing at the exact spot to better do its job.

what is the point of reserving units instead of just fielding them in the beginning? wouldn't you get more fire power on turn 1 if you fielded them all at once?

but if they are in reserve they can come in anywhere (or almost) on the board, like behind your opponents leman russ for example

picture this turn 3 deep strike your twinlink fuision blaster XV8 team behind that predator that is giving you problem, turn 4 deep strike your stealth team in front of that unit that is in charge range of your FW that is holding an objective.

you get the idea.

that is why when the Chaos Demon codex came out the players at my hobby store pretty much says WTF when they saw how they were deployed.

Plus the first turn isn't necessarely the most important one, you don't always have the opportunity to fire all your weapon anyway. Reserve/deep strike/flanking allow you to react to your opponent tactic in a more flexible fashion, bringing your troops were they are most needed...usually.
