Default need help with my first Tau army (1750 points)

I'm a german player and quite new to W40k but I decided to go for the Tau.
The most people at our local store got 1750 points armys or at least this seems to be the normal size.

I didn't play any real game up until now so I obviously lack in practise but I started collecting my army and I think this is gonna be the list I'll play:

(I hope these are the correct english names ... I'm german so I only know the german names)

1 [Shas'o Commander] Ion Blaster, Plasma rifle, Missile Pod, cybernetic multi trackers

12 [Firewarriors] , 1 Shas'ui with a Bonding Knive and a drone controller and 2 Attack Dones
+ [Devilfish] with these two system upgrades for 5 points each (don't know the english name)

12 [Firewarriors] , 1 Shas'ui with a Bonding Knive and a drone controller and 2 Attack Dones
+ [Devilfish] with these two system upgrades for 5 points each (don't know the english name)

12 [Firewarriors] , 1 Shas'ui with a Bonding Knive and a drone controller and 2 Attack Dones
+ [Devilfish] with these two system upgrades for 5 points each (don't know the english name)

12 [Kroot] , 4 Kroot Hounds

3 [Crisis XV8] Fireknive Configuration with Teamleader with Bonding Knive

6 [XV25 Stealth] all Pulse Canons, with Team Leader with Bonding Knive, Drone Controller and two Attack Drones

1 [Hammerhead] Railgun and with these two system upgrades for 5 points each (don't know the english name)

So, all in all this makes 1654 points, some points to fill up.

Do you have some ideas to improve it ?

You need more heavy weaponry.... the army as it stands now would be decent at swarm and GEQ armies but not very good against vehicle/MEQ armies.

Drop the shas'o for a shas'el with targeting array it's cheaper point wise. I don't think you need a fire knife HQ if you have a fire knife unit.

Dump all gun drones and take another unit of something else.

Dump Kroot hounds....you want to avoid Hand to Hand. Period.

I would cut all FW units and kroot to 10 models

split your stealth team and give them marker lights.

Give your hammer heads....multitracker and target lock

Invest in more hammerheads and/or broadsides.

It is missing lights.

As a 4th edition game, this army would do ok.

But in 5th edition, you need marker lights. They can come off of Marker Drones, Fire Warrior team leaders, Sniper controllers, Hammer heads, or path finders.

You have one light with the Hammer Head (iirc)
That means one infantry unit in the trees gets the cover save lowered by one, instead of a path finder team completely eliminating the cover save.

Get more lights.

No. What I am saying is that my Air Support has lots of Ground Cadre.

If a Land Raider dies to a rail gun, and no one was around to see it, does the kill point still exist?

Nope no light. Only skyray has a networked markerlight.

Ok, thanks guys
(I didn't know that a list section exists)

So here are my questions:

- I don't plan to play with many crisis, just one team(fireknive) + my commander of course. So which config should he have ?
(by the way ... could someone explain me the concept of a ninja'o ? and does it still work in the 5th edition ?)

- Ok .. markers seems to be quite awesome. Some scouts should be alright for this I think. How many of them do I need in a 1750 army ? and wich other marker options would you propose ?

- How many Kroot do I need ? would be two troops of 10 kroot enough ? (without hounds)

- I assume there's no real answer for what's better, a xv88 or a hammerhead, but I think I'll go for more hammerheads. Should I take 3 of them in a 1750 army ?

- Since I think I'll play with 3 troops of firewarriors (10 FW per troop) and one troop of scouts. How many devilfishes do I need ?

- what's a swarm and GEQ army ?

- and at least ... how would you play a 1750 tau army ?

Swarm: Anything that can rush you with massive amount of miniature
GEQ: Guard EQuivalent (army that has stats similar to Imperial guard)
MEQ: Marine EQuivalent
TEQ: Teminator EQuivalent

As to the how to play them, there is a bunch of Tactica on the the boards and on the Tau Online web site. It lists a lot of play styles and what the abilities of each unit are, what you might do with them etc. Was really good.

Kroot are specialized for the forest and jungle. No forest/jungle = no need for Kroot. (I am a huge advocate of sticking Kroot in the jungle. Birds of paradise!) I know in 5th edition them can be flankers, but that's only going to get you so far.

Stealth teams and marker lights always seem to go hand in hand almost as good as Path Finders and lights, plus you get that niffty burst cannon or fusion blaster. Snipers get the whole markerlight, hit from range and the ability to pin down an advancing unit. Depends on the situation on which is best. (I am a big advocate of the sniper drones due to I play against marines a lot and have to kill Termies.)

Lastly, thanks Bone. Some one stole all my infantry Tau and I haven't picked up my Codex since.

stole all your tau ? ... that's really mad. If you ever see that guy again, take his miniatures and throw them into a river (throw him afterwards)
thanks for your help.

So I understand the usefullness of stealth suits and marker lights ... however, I'm not sure about the sniper drones. Just dislike them a bit. Maybe I'll go for them if I run into a lot of marine power but so long I think two hammerheads would be enough support.

here's my new list so far:

1 [Shas'o] Ninja'o playstyle. Not sure about the exact configuration

3 [Crisis XV8] Fireknives
3 [Stealth XV25] one of them as a captain with markerlight, targeting array and bonding knive
3 [Stealth XV25] one of them as a captain with markerlight, targeting array and bonding knive

10 [Firewarrior] one of them as a captain with markerlight and bonding knive + [Devilfish] Not sure about the config
10 [Firewarrior] one of them as a captain with markerlight and bonding knive
10 [Firewarrior] one of them as a captain with markerlight and bonding knive

10 [Kroot]

6 [Scouts] all markerlights and a captain with a bonding knive + [Devilfish] Not sure about the config

2 [Hammerheads] Railguns but not sure about the config

This aren't 1750 points I think, maybe there still some points left. Also I think to cut the Kroot for some Sniper Drones since they're cool with markerlight help. Also I'm not sure about the two Devilfishes being enough.

Give every one of your captain a Hard-wired targetlock and a hard-wired multitracker. The reason is that with the Multitracker he can shoot both the markerlight and his regular un together and the target lock allow him to shoot at a different unit then his own team (allowing another squad to better benefit from his Markerlight, since his own squad can not)
