Default how to go about taking on an eldar army

my bro plays eldar and i have, for a while now, had a good amount of respect for this particular army. in my opinion, they are one of the only armies who, if used correctly, can match the tau (assuming that the tau player uses his troops correctly. anyways, when i play my bro, we tend to get relatively close games. i usually win due to the fact that i am older and have a bit more experience, but i was wondering what, if any, is the elder's weakness so that, when i face other eldar players who have a bit more "strategic brilliance" than my brother, i know how to win.

Eldar are probably the only mech army that will match tau for speed and firepower.
The only thing i would say is to watch out for the support weapons.

For games where objectives need taking, always take out their jetbikes as they can claim and/or contest objectives very late game very easily.

But not durability, Holofalcon Aside. Eldar are glass cannons, powerful but breakable. If you can catch a mistake and punish them for it, they'll take it much harder than most armies.

They're fragile, exploit weaknesses and you'll do fine.

1)Most eldar have a toughness of 3. That means that most of our weapons will wound them on 2s. It's entirely possible to wipe out an entire guardian squad with one FoF(Though many experienced players shun guardians). The experienced eldar player at our store hates this little factoid.

2)Max armour value is 12. Very easy to harm in some way.

3)with the exception of a few units, their armour is 4+. Combined with their low toughness this makes it very easy to force saves on them(or completely ignore the save, making it even easier). This applies to most characters as well, meaning that if they fail a save against our plasma or missile pods they will die instantly.

Bikers can be a problem, they're fast. Like most eldar units though, they're fragile. They still have an alright save and the bike boosts their toughness, but they can still be taken out.

Watch out for Eldar close combat specialists, they can chew us up something awful. Scorpions are more dangerous to us in my experience, they've got a higher save than banshees and can weather fire and blows more easily. They also wound us more often than banshees.

so what your saying is that oven cleaner can remove paint from plastic models? and after that, you take a toothbrush to your plastic model, and the paint just comes off?

A freind of mine plays eldar we have only had a few games but I usually take a fair amount of markerlights/ seeker missiles in bigger games to take out his grav tanks wich normally conceal a unit of striking scorpions oh and taking down a wraithlord first turn before it can move is nice too.

Try this: Markerlights.

They negate the cover save afforded to fast skimmers under the new rules, and combined with some heavier weaponry like Broadside teams or Fusion-armed battlesuits, Eldar vehicles turn to smoldering wrecks.

As for their infantry, they're very specialised and expensive, so attack with things like Hammerhead submunitions or mobs of Kroot. After they are weakened from those they should be easy pickings for a gunline or two.

Eldar aren't that scary if you either 1. Pack a ton of heavy weapons or 2. Pack a ton of men. Luckily Tau is -really- good at doing both, so brainstorm a list to combine your best units and you'll be fine.

One thing that I've found to be very effective against eldar is just plain sheer volume of fire. As long as you hit the eldar units the Tau have few weapons that wound Eldar on less than 2. Unless you count wraithlords. Bikes are different because they get the toughness boost which I constantly forget about. However, they're still only about as tough as a space marine but in a much smaller squad. Fire warriors rapid firing, Burst Cannons (Stealth or Crisis suits), Blast Templates, Smart Missile system and Missile Pods will all work wonders against their infantry. Use marker lights to remove any pesky cover saves and you've got a good basis.

Eldar vehicles used to be a huge problem but they got whacked with the Nerf Bat something fierce! Railguns can now penetrate their armor even if they've moved and you'll be doing that on a 3+ for almost every vehicle they've got. Fusion blasters are also a big threat to Eldar tanks now. They're still faster than our tanks so something I'm going to do if I play against an Eldar player is either...

A) Use piranhas with fusion blasters to chase them down....

or

B) Deepstrike crisis suits with fusion to their position rather than chase them

Both seem like they could be pretty solid. Anyway, I hope this helps.

I was under the impression all their skimmers had that energy field that causes all hits of strength higher than 8 to be treated as Strength 8 (and disallows the extra d6 for meltas at half range).

Haven't played eldar with Tau yet myself, so i can only theorize, and that tends to get me into trouble.

Nope. Wave Serpents and War Walkers have that energy field. The rest are usually given holofields in stead - meaning you roll 2 dice on the damage table and take the lowest.

Which is awesome... >
