1. the number of fire warriors you should take depends on the points value in a 1750 pt battle i usually take 2 units of 12.
2. as for the weapons it depends on what you doing with the fire warriors i usually have my fire warriors in a static position so i give them pulse rifles. but if you want to put your fire warriors in a forward position or think your going to be moving them constantly then i would go with the carbines.

also i like to try and get a markerlight into my fire warrior teams if theyre gonna be stationary.

Generally pulse rifles are better. However, I like having at least a six man team (usually twelve so I can mount them) with carbines. They're just cool, and perform well for pinning and storming positions. Not as effective, but very cool.

Try not to mix and match though, generally that doesn't work out well.

Mech tau work very well against many armies. (but that may be changing very soon) Taking a bucket load of fire warriors, all in warfish, with a hand full of rail guns or suits can be devastating to most swarm armies. However if your going up against something like marines, necron, or eldar, few fire warriors is not a bad thing.

another recommendation would be the bundle that GW is selling that includes 8 fire warriors and a devilfish for $40 bucks. It's a great value. Considering that a devilfish costs $35 it's like getting 8 fire warriors for $5! You cant beat that with a stick.

Fire warriors are always good with battlesuits backing them up, and pathfinders with markerlights give you the accuracy you need to take out just about anything.

Also don't forget to put them in cover. Also spread out your troops so they're not vulnerable to template weapons. Take advantage of your battlefield.

12 man squad with 10 rifles and 2 carbines.

I usually go with 2 full squads of 12 one armed w/ pulse rifles, and a Shas'ui w/ markerlight an hardwired target lock.

Although with the advent of 5th and troops as scoring units, I'm thinking more might be advisable. *shrug*

I used to go with 6 minimum unupgraded squads. This is so that I lose as little fire power as possible when I get stuck in CC.

Tho this will probably change with the 5th ed. - what with mklight becoming king and all
