I'm not sure if this is the right place for this...

Anywho, I personally enjoy painting kroot because you can get a really good effect on the skin just by drybrushing. It's also fun to paint tribal markings and war paint on 'em if you have a good eye for detail.
However, I find it frustrating to pick out all the sculpted details (armbands, medallions etc).

I enjoy panting them
especially the hair/crests
also there tummies
but yeah, all the little armbands/ornaments can be a bit tiresome

I'll agree, mine were easy to do and the little fiddly bits were no bother for me. might get them out for some tribal marking though...that's a good plan. I did their 'hair' black with some white paint on the tips, might continue that onto their body's. I originally did it to link them to my white armoured fire warriors.

They're nice to paint after you've gone through a ton of Tau units. My first group of Kroot came at around the 1000 point mark and being the first miniatures I'd painted that weren't Tau I had a blast with all the new techniques and colors I was using.

They're very unique miniatures in a Race that prides itself on uniformity. I think you'll enjoy it.

What color schemes and methods do you all use for Kroot?

i've only painted my Kroot Hounds so far (using Knarloc Green basecoat with a Catachan Green\Rotting Flesh mix highlight.

The problem, however, from a modelers and converters point of view is that they are terrible sculpts at times.
Have you tried gluing Kroot arms flat to the shoulder joins, with the gun in a decent position?
Yeah, impossible, unless you use a little GS.

Well, to answer your question,

On the one hand, the heavily contoured models are really easy to apply basic highlights and shading to. I for one, use... 3 layers of color and one coat of ink for mine... which isn't a lot, but is enough for regular gaming pieces. I paint my tau very conservatively though, mind you, so I rarely have more than a few colors on any given model anyway.

As for the issue brought up by RZ, I think it really depends on the degree of detail you're looking to put into your Kroot. The way I paint my Kroot, most of the rough seams and grooves are usually quite dark colored, and the high contrast I use on the light parts also help mask the imperfections of the sculpts fairly well, which allows me to do without GS most of the time.

Thanks to the ease of drybrushing Kroot are fun to paint (kroot-ox takes the cake though), IMO. Throw in all the interesting do-dads that they can have attached to them, and they just exude character. 16+ models however does get tedious :P.
