Due to the fact that the tau have little presents in the warp, one might conclude they are as near souless as any civilized species is going to get, so in a way the greater good is their replacement of religion in their society. everything they do is not for themselves but for the good of their race, ie the greater good.

just because they are patriotic or something to a cause doesn't make them souless

Well, I'd believe that the basis of some parts of the Tau fluff is actually based in Japanese history, like with the visual design.
In Japan, there was once a belief that the Emperor was a direct decendant of the sun goddess, and thus, divine (kinda like the Ethereal).
These devine figures would lead their troops into battle where the soldiers wouldn't give a second's thought of sacraficing themselves for worthy causes like the survival of a group, or their leaders, ie the Greater Good.
Think of them as a form of samurais, and the Ethereal is their lord.
Actually, I guess Stealths also fall under a catagory like this. They'd probably be ninjas. As in for real ninjas, not the glorified ones in movies and games. These actualy take the role of army disruption. Attack a large group with bombs and smoke weapons, kill a few in the confusion, then leave, destroying the moral of the enemy troops. They could also sneak to important locations and attack sentries, commanders, or even the lord if the situation makes it possible.
Crisis is calvary, and then there's more, but that's getting too far from this subject.

Also, I think the idea isn't that they're souless, but their completely different beliefs and ideals takes them to such a different path from the rest of the universe, that their minds are difficult to detect in, and also have little influence on the warp. Kinda like AM and FM? Such a different frequency that you can barely pick up one with the other. Or mabe more like digital and analog? They just won't understand each other?

The greater good is simply a Tau religon, but instead of choosing their own religon, the Tau are born into it.

It's not precisely a religion, at least not in the "organized" sense of the word, but rather a cultural ideal based on service and duty. To give a contemporary example, Democracy often gets used in the same way by Western countries, as Communism was in Russia. You elevate a philosophical form of government from just an administrative strategy into an object of adulation. I like Tsumishi's description of the connections between the Tau and historical Japanese culture. That is where GW got most of the background, and I think the comparisons are very valid.

Thanks, just wait to when I figure out a way to tie Japanese culture to Jump Jets and Hammer Heads. Or should I just point to the SDF-1 Macross and Strike Aile Gundam? (check www.mahq.net, under Macross, and "Gundam Seed" if you don't already know)
