Default Thinking of starting Tau

Well summer is almost hear and you can only have pool parties and play football so many times, so I will have plenty of time on my hands for warhammer.

I have a rather massive Imperial Guard army, so I figured I would move on to a different race. While I have a keen dislike of the Tau do to their naive ways, I like the models and after playing a couple of games against them, I see that they can pack quite a punch. As a Guard player I am a big fan of immense firepower, and only the Tau come close to the IG in that department.

My big concern is close combat. We all know that the Guard are not the best at close combat, but they have plenty of upgrades and doctrines available so that they can stand their ground in close combat and sometimes actually win as is the case with disgusting command squad which comes out to around 500 points but can kill a carnifex in one charge...

The Tau, however, have the crummiest weapon skill and initiative in the game. A unit of grots could beat them for crying out loud!

I guess my question is, do the Tau have sufficient upgrades and such like the IG to make them at least the equal of the IG in combat? I'm talking about standard fire warriors, not kroot.

Simply put, no. The only wargear they have that affects CC is the grenades, photon meaning the enemy gets no bonus attack for charging, and EMP which only affects vehicles. Tau's main defence against charging is to gun down the enemy before they get into charging range, if they do get to close then you can use a Devilfish to get them outa there or (I know you said not Kroot) put a squad of kroot in a line in front of the fire warriors to protect them from chargers.

so the kroot are really the only way for me to get a close combat squad?

dont forget these guys!

and since you have them already! DOUBLE WIN!

if you need advice, I wrote an article detailing them in certain situations. If you want close combat, ill give you a hint. All at once, and dont try it on 2+ svs.

...I've never heard of "human helpers" before, are those rules valid?

And also they have the following special rule:

Traitors. Although the Humans who have joined the Tau empire bear no ill-will towards their former compatriots, the same can not be said of Imperial troops fighting the Auxiliaries. Imperial troops will always hit a Gue’vesa on a roll of 3+ in close combat, regardless of relative Weapon Skill.

But back to the first question, Tau are not made to be good at close combat, they are good in many other ways that should not be overlooked. If you do play Tau be ready to put your fire warriors on the defensive because they have the best standard weapon in the game (pulse rife - and being a guard player myself I understand why you think that packs a punch ) But that doesn't help you when the enemy takes the fight face to face with your flimsy card-board cut-outs.

valid at a point, no one has complained so far with me using them. (1 less pulserifle in concept)

but tau arent that worse from normal guard.

they both hit marines on 4`s, and wound on 5`s

firewarriors can save on 4`s as opposed to 5`s

however point wise, you can still get more humans then tau. Making them a long run overlooked threat.

These guys may be the last thing dead, if fire warriors are in decent numbers.

So theoretically I could use the guardsmen I have as the bulk of my army. That would certainly make things more cost effective.

cost effective yes. Yet, remember tau troops are usually designed against troops.

tanks for tanks etc...

Ah yes, they can't field the heavy weapon that standard guard infantry do.

I've painted over a hundred guardsmen though. I want something different to paint with different colors etc. Maybe I'll pick up some kroot and go from there.

Well if you if you want to save money then Gue'vesa would be good. But for 1 point more you can get something that is better in close combat and has a better gun, the only downside being they have SV: - meaning they turn into a chicken dinner when a flamer comes along.
